🌑 LOOK UP! SOMETHING AMAZING IS HAPPENING! 🌑

Today, we have a Partial Solar Eclipse happening and it’s the perfect excuse to pause, look up and explore the science behind what’s happening above us!

But what actually IS an eclipse? Why do shadows form? And how does the Moon manage to block some of the Sun’s light?

🔭 STEAM CHALLENGE:
Can you make your own eclipse using a light source and two objects? What happens to the shadow when you move them closer or further away?

⚠️ Remember: Never look directly at the Sun even during an eclipse. Always use properly certified solar viewing glasses/filters designed for solar viewing.

So grab your eclipse glasses, get outside and LOOK TO THE SKIES!

Eeek…is anyone else getting excited in Plymouth!!!

Anyone that knows us, knows we are…tomorrow is going to be a pretty spectacular day for anyone who loves the night sky!

As someone who absolutely loves space, I couldn’t let this one pass without sharing what we’ve got happening right here in Plymouth.

PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE - the Moon will pass in front of the Sun, creating a spectacular partial eclipse. Plymouth is expected to experience around 95% coverage!

BRITISH FIREWORK CHAMPIONSHIPS - just when you think the sky couldn’t get any more exciting…Plymouth’s famous British Firework Championships return to the Hoe!

THE PERSEID METEOR SHOWER - the Perseid meteor shower is reaching its peak around 12–13 August, giving us another reason to keep our eyes on the night sky.

Three very different kinds of light in our sky…all happening around the same time!

How incredible is that?!

This is exactly why I love STEAM because sometimes you don’t need a classroom or a worksheet.

You just need to look up and wonder.

🎈 Mission Surprise Sunday 🎈

🤯 Can you inflate a balloon (or glove) without blowing into it?

It might sound like magic… but it’s actually SCIENCE! 🔬

You’ll need:

🥤 An empty plastic bottle
🎈 A balloon or a disposable glove
🥣 Warm water
🥶 A bowl of cold water (or ice water)

Your mission:

1️⃣ Stretch the balloon or glove over the top of the empty bottle.
2️⃣ Stand the bottle in a bowl of warm water and watch closely…
3️⃣ Now move the bottle into cold water and see what happens!

💭 Before you start, make a prediction:
Will the balloon…
🅰️ Inflate
🅱️ Stay the same
🅲️ Shrink

🔍 What’s happening?

When the air inside the bottle is warmed, the tiny air particles move faster and spread out, taking up more space. This makes the balloon (or glove) inflate.

When the bottle cools down, the air particles slow down and take up less space, so the balloon deflates again.

That’s science in action, showing how gases expand when heated and contract when cooled!
