Pickering Pre-school is a friendly Playgroup situated in the Portacabin at the Pickering Infant School in the heart of Pickering. We have been established since 1965 so nearly 50 years. We are also members of the Pre-School Learning Alliance. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage that pre-school, nurseries and schools follow. The EYFS covers 7 areas of learning which are split into two areas

the Prime Areas and Specific Areas. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Communication and Language
Physical Development
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design

At Pickering Pre-School we have a robust key worker system in place this helps give your child a more secure, stable and safe time in setting and also helps build the relationships with families. Each child will have a Learning Journey for their time in Pre-School which shows their development through observations, photographs and examples of their work. All our staff work hard to ensure each child has a happy and enjoyable time while also helping them to achieve and promote their learning in all areas of the EYFS. We continually assess and then plan for the next step in your childs learning. Everyone is welcome and staff and committee are always happy to help and answer any questions or concerns you may have. Opening Hours

PLAYGROUP SESSIONS
Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs & Fri mornings 9:00 - 12:00am
Monday or Friday afternoon until 3pm

STAY AND PLAY
This is the baby/toddler (0-4) and parent/carer session – running each Wednesday 1.15pm until 2.45pm in term time. Come along and join your child in experiencing different craft activities, music and singing, small world play, dressing up and role playing in our home corner and enjoying our outdoor facilities including, bikes and trikes, climbing apparatus and water and sand play all led by friendly and qualified staff. Snack is available for the children and you can meet other parents and carers of the children that your child will move through the local schools with. Don’t miss out come and discover what we have to offer. The cost is £2.50

We are a committee run playgroup that endeavours to give high quality childcare to the people of Pickering and surrounding areas. We are constantly on the look out for new committee members (committee members are essential, as if there isn't a chairperson and several committee members then playgroup cannot run). We also need people who can help out at fundraising events. If you are interested in either of these things please talk to the staff at playgroup.

Check out one of our Preschool children exploring one of this weeks activities! 🎨

Using tweezers in early years strengthens hand-finger muscles, builds hand-eye coordination, and develops the pincer grasp (thumb-index finger) necessary for writing, self-care, and hand strength. This activity boosts concentration, patience, and visual motor control, serving as a foundational exercise for fine motor development!

7 Weeks Summer Holidays! 😵‍💫Does the idea of no childcare for 7 weeks worry you?!

Little Puddings to rescue! 🦸‍♂️ We are thinking of providing a Holiday Club for 2 weeks during summer, our provisional dates would be;

📅Week Commencing: Monday 27th July - Friday 31st July
📅Week Commencing: Tuesday 1st September - Friday 4th September

We would be able to provide childcare for children aged 0-4, and will be providing a lunch and snacks throughout the day, the course of the day will run from 9am-3pm ⌚

We are still finalising some minor details, but are reaching out to the local community to see if this would benefit any families that are not already enrolled with us! If you would like any more information, please do not hesitate to get in touch!

Lots of fun had at Pickering Library visiting Vicky Smithson from Little signs, Big voices - Makaton Training Provider!

We got to listen to a signed Makaton story, play some fun games and explore some wonderful resources! Thankyou for such a lovely morning Vicky! 🐻

📖 HAPPY WORLD BOOK DAY! 📖

We can’t wait to see all of your wonderful costumes, outfits and pyjamas! 🧚🏼‍♀️

Today we will be sharing lots of our favourite stories, with the children receiving a world book day token which they can exchange for a book of their choice from our wonderful local book shop Pickering Book Tree! 📕

Reading is such an important part of early years learning, It enhances vocabulary, strengthens parent-child bonding, improves concentration, and stimulates imagination. 💭 Regular reading sessions, including stories and rhymes, boost brain 🧠 development, communication skills, and emotional intelligence.

This week has been out of this world! 🌍 we have been busy learning and exploring through the topic of Space!

Our baby room have been exploring some sensory trays, and have had lots of fun in their very own rocket 🚀

Our Preschool room have been using their fine motor skills to make some threaded spaghetti rockets, painting planets, we even made a cake and decorated it to look like planet earth 🌎
