I’m not ashamed to admit that before having children, I hadn’t really thought about babies waking up at night.

Of course they wake up at night. Obviously.

But had I thought about waking up to feed one during the night?

Absolutely not. 😂

It genuinely hadn’t crossed my mind.

I had apparently thought the baby would just… go to bed?

Looking back, there were so many things I hadn’t even thought to ask about before having my first baby.

And that’s the thing about becoming a parent.

You don’t know what you don’t know.

That’s one of the reasons I love antenatal education.

Sometimes you just need someone to say:

“By the way… have you thought about this?”

Because chances are, I hadn’t either. 😂

I’m changing the way I price my antenatal courses.

For a while, I’ve been trying to work out what a competitive price is for a private antenatal course.

But then I had a bit of a moment where I thought…

Actually, forget what makes the most business sense. 😂

I’m going to listen to what I actually want Embrace Parenthood to be about.

⭐️Accessible antenatal education⭐️

My long-term goal is to eventually set up Embrace Parenthood as a charity or CIC, so that I can access funding and offer free or subsidised antenatal education.

That’s a big goal, though, and it’s going to take time. Especially when I’m currently juggling a full-time job and two small children! 😂

So, for now, I’m taking a small step towards that goal and introducing a sliding-scale approach to my private antenatal courses.

There are three suggested price points:

£125 — Supported
For those who need a more affordable option.

£225 — Standard contribution
The price I’m suggesting for most people.

£275 — Pay it forward
For those who are able to contribute a little more, helping me keep the lower-cost option available.

But you don’t have to fit yourself neatly into one of those three.

You can choose any amount between £125 and £275.

There are no forms.
No questions about your circumstances.
No proving that you “need” the lower price.

I trust you to choose the price that feels right for your circumstances, and just let me know what you’ve chosen.

If you can afford to pay the standard contribution or a little more, brilliant. That helps me make this model work.

And if you need the lower price, please don’t feel like you shouldn’t get in touch. That’s exactly why it’s there.

I’m not trying to make antenatal education free overnight. I can’t do that yet.

But I can make it more accessible now, while I work towards making it even more accessible in the future.

One year ago today, I made a complaint about my birth.

It took me a long time to find the right mindset, and the right words, to actually do it.

A year later, I’m still waiting for a response that properly addresses what I’ve raised.

It’s draining, and it takes a lot of time and energy to keep chasing.

But I’m still doing it because I want accountability.

I want them to acknowledge what went wrong and understand why it happened. And I want to know what they’re going to do differently as a result.

Because I want things to be better for the women who come after me.

And that’s a huge part of why I care so much about antenatal education.

Being informed doesn’t mean you can control your birth or prevent things from happening. But understanding your options, knowing your rights and feeling able to ask questions and speak up matters.

I know how much I didn’t know before I had my first baby.

That’s why I do what I do now.

Plan for the birth you want.

But also plan the births you don’t want.

This is something I say a LOT in my antenatal courses.

Not because I expect things to go wrong.

Not because I want you to be scared.

But because if your birth does go off plan, it doesn’t mean you’ve lost all control over how that birth happens.

If you end up having a caesarean birth, you’re having your caesarean birth.

If induction comes up, it’s your induction.

If you need an assisted birth, extra monitoring, pain relief you hadn’t planned for, or something else you hadn’t imagined, you’re still able to ask questions, understand what’s happening and be involved in the decisions.

That’s why I don’t just want you to think about your ideal birth.

I want you to talk about, think about and understand the other possibilities too.

Because when you’ve already considered different eventualities, a change of plan doesn’t have to mean handing over all your decision-making.

You can still ask questions.

You can still understand your options.

You can still make choices.

You can still have things your way, even when “your way” looks completely different from what you originally imagined.

That’s a huge part of what I want people to get from my antenatal courses.

Plan for the birth you want. But also plan the births you don’t want.

Because being prepared for the unexpected doesn’t mean expecting the worst. ❤️

The downside of teaching private, one-to-one antenatal courses…

I get attached. 😂

I’m just coming to the end of another antenatal course at the moment and, honestly, I’m a little bit sad about it.

You start off as two people who have never met, and then over the course of a few weeks we’re talking about birth, feeding, newborns, your worries, your plans and all the random questions that pop into your head at 9pm.

And because it’s a private antenatal course, there’s time to actually get to know each other.

You don’t have to sit in a room full of other couples wondering whether your question is silly.

You can just ask me.

And I can get to know you, rather than just delivering the same antenatal course to a room of people.

That’s one of the things I really love about offering private antenatal education.

Yes, we’ll cover all the important stuff — birth, interventions, your rights, feeding, newborn care and those first few weeks — but we can also talk about the things that are specific to you.

And then the course ends and I’m like…

Oh.

A little update on the Parenthood Space ❤️

For now, the Parenthood Space is taking a pause.

We set up the space because we really believe in the importance of having somewhere local where parents can come together, feel less alone and talk about the realities of parenthood.

We haven’t had quite the take-up we’d hoped for so far, so rather than carrying on with something that isn’t quite working as we’d intended, we’re taking a step back and looking at how we can do things differently.

We’re not going anywhere.

We’re going to pivot the Parenthood Space and work towards bringing it back in a way that works better for the parenthood community here in Peterborough.

We want it to be something that genuinely feels useful, welcoming and worth making time for … so we’re going to take what we’ve learnt so far and use it to shape what comes next.

We’ll be back as soon as we can, and we’ll keep you updated along the way.
