The bravery of Police Officers
In early 1955, a number of women were attacked by the same man – William George Barnett - when walking down Fairfield Path, an alleyway in Croydon.
In order to catch the attacker, a group of female police officers volunteered to act as decoys.
WPC Kathleen Parrott was amongst those who were attacked. Although during the incident she began to lose consciousness, Kathleen managed to rip his mask from his face.
The same officer and her colleague, WPS Ethel Bush, both played key roles in apprehending Barnett.
Whilst out on patrol on 23rd April, Ethel spotted a man matching the description of the attacker – it was Barnett. Ethel quickly returned to the police station, changed into plain clothes and bravely went back to the area to act as a decoy.
Ethel was soon encountered by Barnett, when he then picked up a log and brought it down on her head from behind.
Rather than fall to the ground, Ethel turned to face Barnett. With blood gushing down her face and shoulders, she grabbed hold of his jacket in an attempt to apprehend him. Unfortunately, Barnett punched her in the face and escaped.
Ethel and Kathleen were among nine women who identified him, and he was subsequently arrested.
He was later jailed for 10 years.
At the trial, the judge commended both Kathleen and Ethel, saying: “I cannot myself imagine higher courage being shown than when you went along that path with the full knowledge and your eyes open that you might be, and you Sergeantt Bush were, the victim of a violent attack.”
Both officers were awarded the George Medal at Buckingham palace on 22nd November 1955.
