This week is eating disorders week and we are honouring it by holding a session on understanding basics and recognising difficult relationships with food in counselling room. These complex mental health presentations are complex and affect all the people who care for them. Our Judeo-Christian culture values bodily discipline around food intake. Cartesian dualism of body v soul encourages the conflict between those two whilst in fact we are a whole and not nourishing our bodies affects our mental states. In our culture food is so much more than fuel: it can be a moral judgement and source of shame. It can be a weapon, prize, treat, punishment (Brussel sprouts šŸ¤¢) (personal opinion here)ā€¦ powerful stuff. We cannot go without food which makes it very tricky to work with an requires specialist training. Thinking if all those affected and hoping you have people around you supporting you.
