The sounds /ʊ/ and /ʌ/ are short vowels.
/ʊ/ is produced with a slightly back tongue and slightly rounded lips, as in put and good.

/ʌ/ is produced with a mid-open jaw, a slightly back tongue, and relaxed lips, as in sun and love.

■ A neutral English accent has 19 vowel sounds.
✦ There are 3 types of English vowel sound - short, long and diphthong.
✦ English spelling does not always show us which sound to pronounce.
✦ We will learn how to pronounce each individual vowel sound on this course.
