Yes we did child led Christmas crafts as always but boy did we engage in some wonderful experiences. Here at curious cubs there is a real emphasis on using curiosity and making links. Answering the question 'What is Christmas' has such more of an impact when the world is their horizon.

In the lead up to Christmas we did so so much!

🎄We visited many different national trusts
🎄We went out for Christmas lunch
🎄We hired a room with other registered childminders to do Christmas crafts.
🎄We hired another room for our Christmas party with other registered childminders
🎄We explored garden centres
🎄We promoted physical wellbeing at soft plays
🎄Museums Museums and more museums
🎄There were muddy boots and elf hunts on different farms
🎄Christmas walks at the arboretum

With our emphasis on self care, healthy eating and oral hygiene approaching plans for our upcoming adventures are already in the works 🥰

As I clear away the 'invitations to play' ready to create new learning experiences I started thinking about all the open ended questions and how the children's curiosity takes the learning so so far. We often enjoy the experiences and professional company of the brilliant Educators at Wolves Play Cafe and their kindness often leads to being gifted resources. Something as simple as a bag of lemons can lead to such a simple question as 'what is a lemon' that can go so far.
Cooking, crafting, creating, mathematics, sharing and turn taking, communication, support for early mark making, but above all else the children's ability to decide their own learning! To tailor their experiences to promote their own learning in ways that are so valuable as they are individualised to them.

In the joyful chaos of this festive season I take time to reflect on my time spent with this tiny human who has moved on to a new adventure after 2 and a half years. I'm so excited for him to share what a funny, kind clever little boy he is, and even though he is now 85 miles away he will always be close in my heart.

Such mixed emotions at the end of one ‘school’ year and the beginning of another.

Feeling joyous to be welcoming new cubs to the pride. Excited to begin the new adventures ❤️

Feeling very proud that such strong bonds have been built with growing cubs as they move onto their next adventure! Thank you to their mommy that sent me this lovely photo of them getting ready to start their new adventure. I know they will be fabulous and am wishing them all the luck!
It was a lovely touch that when mommy asked them if they needed help they said ‘ No I need to have perseverance!’

Well it’s that time of year again. The sun is out, the flowers are growing and we have once again said goodbye to our butterflies. Of course we have had the hungry caterpillar book, jigsaws, threading and crochet play food from the story but that was just the beginning of the adventure.

🦋 When our catterpillars arrived, as always, such excitement fizzed through the air. Curiosity a plenty! Stored at the children’s level with play numbers, magnifying glasses, books and opportunities for mark making the children were taught about how to care for animals with gentle hands and caring hearts ❤️

🦋 As always we worked together to make playdough in the slow-cooker and added the colours that the children thought represented the catterpillars. The addition to tools, beads, flowers and natural materials created a perfect environment for the children to create sculptures, tell stories and practice all those necessary fine motor skills to get ready for early writing.

🦋 “Where go get berries?” Asked one of the cubs as we read the hungry caterpillar for our second daily story. “My mom goes Sainsbury’s.” chimed in another. Quick hop in the car the next day just 15 minutes down the road to a strawberry picking farm to meet up with another childminder, and the baskets quickly filled! Let’s take some home I suggested…. That was until I tasted one with the cubs…not a single one made it to the car 😂

🦋 We created a shopping list with pictures and popped to Lidl to find all of the food from the story. Of corse the cubs followed all of the well established rules and behaved impeccably as we completed our shopping list.

🦋 What a fab way to encourage the children to try new foods. After helping to prepare the foods, the cubs had to show restraint as I read the story. Once they recognised the items on their plates matched the story every single cub tried them… without hesitation, even if they claimed they didn’t like it.

🦋 We had a tiny taste of cupcake and a tiny slither of chocolate cake but lollipops just weren’t worth the safety risk so we made lollies together using yoghurt and lolly molds! What a success.

🦋 We always visit a plethora of fabulous places throughout the week, and this National Trust was perfect. We found an example of how to encourage butterflies to come to the garden. A butterfly drinking station is our project next week.

🦋 Following the interest of the cubs we answered the question ‘what is the best way to get butterflies in the garden’. Whilst taking the opportunity to encourage online safety, we researched and descovered they love flowers. Again off we went on an adventure. Off to the garden centre to get some wild flower seeds, which required reading and taking about the labels, comparing and making choices, and counting out the money for the cashier.

🦋 The butterflies very kindly decided to hatch over 2 seperate mornings, allowing all the cubs to watch the process live as it happened. They climbed out, unfurled and dried their wings and explored the tasty healthy snack we had given them 🥰

After a few days it was time to let them go, but before they flew away, they all had time to sit on the brave children’s hands before flit and fluttering off into the sunshine.

🦋 This weekend I have spent time writing a story with a cartoon of all of us and all the children’s names in, ready for the children to get a gift from the butterflies as a thank you. I can’t wait to see their faces!

WORLD BOOK DAY! Promoting a love of reading is so important that is is done all year round but what a fabulous opportunity to focus on the love of reading with a boost of parental involvement and a cluster of reading themed activities.
📕 We kicked world book day off a day early with a ‘Bear Hunt’ themed teddy bears picnic. The sun was shining, the healthy snacks were flowing and all 15 children and 6 adults had a right blast.

📕 Ha ha, doesn’t that photo of me perfectly capture my passion for children’s stories 😂 jumping, running, laughing and actions ( that’s just me of course😂) and lots of props❤️
📕 Whilst our picnic was going down we went for a fabulous muddy stroll through the woods and to our surprise (😉) there were bears hidden throughout the woods. Lots of language extended with children retelling the story, naming all different types of bears and using directional language to find the bears. Even a cheeky bit of maths thrown in as the bears were numbered and we had to sort them to check there were no numbers missing.

📕 I remember the joy as a child going to the bookshop to choose my own book. And so that’s what we did. We had an absolute blast. The children were all beautifully behaved as usual and the staff at the bookshop made the experience extra special!

📕 On world book day the children were invited to bring in their own books to share with us. One of my favourite additions to our special bookshelf this week has been ‘Don’t let the pigeon drive the bus!’ The activity has now grown and grown and grown with robins, magpies and sparrows all trying to drive trucks trains and even aeroplanes. Oh dear 😂 let’s see where our reading adventures take us next!
