How you build your reputation matters.

Whether we’re talking about business or just being a decent human being, words on their own don’t hold much weight for long.

You can tell people who you are, what you stand for, and what you do. That part matters. Being visible matters.

But if your actions don’t consistently back that up, people notice. You’ll always be found out over time.

Real reputation forms when what you say and how you behave line up, day after day.

That’s how I’ve grown my own work. By doing the work properly, putting the effort in behind the scenes, and letting others decide whether it’s worth trusting and passing on.

It takes time.
But reputation always does — if it’s done right.

If you want to improve communication, you have to start by turning the mirror back on yourself.

That isn’t always comfortable, but it’s been one of the clearest observations from my busiest six months in business.

I’ve worked with a wide range of teams in that time. Different sizes, different pressures, different challenges.

In those early conversations, things often start to point towards how teams are communicating, or where that’s breaking down.

What I’ve learned is that communication is rarely the place to start- It’s the outcome.

The real work begins when individuals are willing to understand themselves first.

When that doesn’t happen, it’s very easy to look outward and see other people as the issue. Conversations drift outside the room, frustration builds, and confidence dips.

When people are prepared to turn the mirror back and take responsibility for how they’re showing up, everything else grows from there.

The small things really are the big things.

It’s a message I repeat (a lot!) in workshops and 1:1 sessions.

The latest tweaks to The Curious Northerner logo might seem small, but for me, it’s pretty symbolic.

It’s been a journey of trial, learning, and growth, worth far more than any fixed destination or definition of success.

I’m proud of how things continue to evolve, and hugely grateful for everyone who’s supported, believed, and followed along the way.

Here’s to the next chapter….. staying curious, learning, and evolving, both personally and professionally.

“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.”

Module 2 explored our thoughts, inner dialogue, and the importance of creating space to act from a place of logic and reality rather than pure emotion.

(That’s not to dismiss emotion. More about acknowledging it, while not letting it take the wheel)

Bringing various models to life through real examples led to genuine vulnerability in the room. This was both surprising and powerful in equal measure.

It sets us up perfectly for the next session where we focus on culture, and seek to build on the growing sense of trust already in the room.

Conflict doesn’t just happen in boardrooms — it happens in everyday conversations.

I ran a DISC session yesterday with a senior leadership team and it struck me again how often clashes are simply misunderstandings in disguise.

We’re not difficult, just different.
When we learn to spot those differences, we create trust, connection, and stronger relationships — at work and in life.

The script handed out-

You work 8 hours to live 4.
You work 5 days to enjoy 2.
You work all year just to get a week or two off.
You work all your life so you can retire in old age with a comfortable pension.

The realisation—

Life isn’t meant to be postponed. It’s a short journey with nothing set in stone.

We’ve got so much choice and freedom available to us outside the confines we choose to attach to ourselves.

The truth—

We need to stop waiting for the perfect moment (it doesn’t exist!). Start writing your own story and live your life on your terms.

The only person you need permission from is you. Get out of your own way and make it count.

Short-term pain, long-term gain.

Saturday was tough.
There was a protest at Hillsborough and I wanted (needed!) to attend.

I love nothing more than having a pint with my dad in the ground before the game — it’s our thing. But I chose not to. Not because I didn’t want to, but because I don’t want to put another penny into a regime that’s killing the club I love.

Next week it’s Leeds in the Cup. Normally I’d snap your hand off for a ticket. But I won’t be buying one. I’ll be honest, I’m torn, I feel conflicted, and it hurts.

But sometimes the harder choice in the short term is the one that matters in the long term.
It’s easy to do what feels good in the moment. Much harder to take the discomfort now for the bigger picture.

And isn’t that the same in life, in leadership, and in business.
The things that are truly worth having, achieving, and building… they usually ask us to go through a few bumps, to make a few sacrifices, to choose the harder road now for the better outcome later.

The power of the pause

Learning to pause just might be the most important step we can take in life

Taking a step back, even for a second changes everything-
How we make decisions.
How we respond rather than react.
How we manage our own well-being.
How we approach conversations.

Practising this day in, day out, is a game changer.

If you want a few simple, easy-to-implement tools or techniques, give me a shout, I’m happy to share them 💪🧠

‘I am not my first thought’

This is something i try and remind myself of when i am approaching something new.

You see- Your first thought is often the one shaped by fear, habit, or self-protection.

It’s automatic, reactive, and designed to keep you safe.

But remember- you get to choose how you respond to ANY situation.

Cultivating the ability to slow things down, take a step back and move forward with conscious intention is a game changer.

1 in 5 adults are on antidepressants.

That doesn’t include children.
And that number is rising.

I’m not a medical professional — just someone who, in adulthood, was told I had a chemical imbalance and was prescribed medication I later discovered I probably shouldn’t have been on.

Today, I re-listened to an episode of Feel Better, Live More with Dr. Rangan Chatterjee and Joanna Moncrieff.

It made me feel angry, sad, and determined — angry at the misinformation, sad for those who feel stuck, and determined to share this resource.

This isn’t anti-medication.
It’s pro-awareness, pro-curiosity, and pro-human.

Because our core needs as people aren’t to be numbed or blocked.

They’re to be seen, heard, supported.

Please give it a listen — it might just be a game changer.
