Most children start their writing journey full of excitement and ideas.

But for some, writing slowly becomes frustrating. Words don’t come easily, spelling feels overwhelming and confidence can begin to fade.

Sometimes these struggles are linked to dyslexia.

Understanding the reason behind a child’s difficulties can make all the difference. It allows adults to help them rebuild confidence and enjoy learning again.

If you’re concerned about your child’s reading or writing, a dyslexia assessment can provide clarity and the right support moving forward.

“My child is bright… so why is reading so hard?”

Children don't always ask for help directly - sometimes they don’t even realise they need it.

Some signs that may indicate dyslexia include:
• delayed early language development
• difficulty recognising rhyming words
• trouble sounding out unfamiliar words
• guessing words from the first letter
• slow or effortful reading

These struggles can be mistaken for lack of effort but many children simply need the right support and understanding.

A specialist dyslexia assessment can help identify your child’s strengths, challenges and the support that will help them thrive.

Early identification can make a huge difference to a child’s confidence and progress.

Why can writing be so hard for children with dyslexia?

When a child with dyslexia writes, they’re not just thinking about ideas.

Their brain may be trying to:
• remember how to spell the words;
• hold the sentence in their memory;
• form each letter;
• organise their thoughts;
• think about punctuation.

All at the same time.

That’s a huge mental load.

So when a dyslexic child writes slowly, avoids writing or gets frustrated, it’s not laziness - their brain is simply working much harder.
And often their ideas are incredible. They just need the right support to get them onto paper.

“Welcome to Oxford Dyslexia. I’m Katherine, a qualified dyslexia assessor, experienced teacher and SEND specialist. I have more than 20 years’ experience in education, including as a leader in mainstream and special schools.

When parents contact me their most common worry is that their child is “falling behind”. I help you understand why and what to do next to support your child.

Quite simply, you cannot help a child if you don’t know why they are struggling. And in today’s busy classrooms even the most experienced teachers can find it difficult to identify and meet the different learning needs of every single child.

That’s where I come in. I offer various types of assessment, from tests to create a personalised intervention plan to meet a specific need, to specialist teacher reports for schools and EHC needs assessments and full diagnostic assessments for dyslexia.

As a qualified Senco and experienced parent advocate, I can also advise you on how to access SEND support for your child.

If you’re a parent or carer who is worried about their child’s progress and education and you need clear, expert advice, you’re in the right place. Contact me today to find out how I can help your child.
