Al-Muqaddimah: A Thematic Study 12/03/2016

NEW BLOG POST

"Some part of [the Muqaddima] might be useful to young college students of Ibn Taymiyya’s time as ‘a survey of the field’; to help them pick their way through the kinds of tafsirs that a good college library would keep on its shelves. But neither the argument nor the structure of the Muqaddima is suited to that purpose. It is clearly addressed to the believers’ need to close the gaps between what they think they know and what they really understand, and between what they really do understand and how they actually live."

Al-Muqaddimah: A Thematic Study What follows is an extract from a draft of the Preface to our forthcoming study of Ibn Taymiyya’s Muqaddima fi Usul al-Tafsir. (Users of this document are reminded that this is a draft and may be considerably changed in the published version.)

Introduction to Isnad and Ijazah (4/5)

The status of female scholars (al-muhaddithat) in the history of hadith transmission.

“Shaykh Muhammad Yasin al-Fadani has written that some of the students of the muhaddithin went to Madina to learn hadith from Amatullah al-Dihlawiyyah. When they came there she narrated to them musalsalat (hadith narrations where the transmitters share or perform the same quality or characteristic or action).

One of these musalsal is ‘Musalsal bil qabdi lahyah’ or ‘Musalsal with holding the beard’.

Shaykh al-Fadani says, ‘when we came to her she narrated every hadith and then she also narrated the hadith musalsal bil qabdi lahyah and she put her hand in the place of the beard ’.

This is a unique isnad because you never have musalsal bil qabdi lahyah from a women – except this one.”

Introduction to Isnad and Ijazah (3/5)

Arguably the highest isnad in the world today:

‘Abd al-Rahman al-Kattani --- Amatullah bint ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Dihlawiyyah --- ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Dihlawi

“Amatullah bint ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Dihlawiyyah is the last student of her father, ‘Abd al-Ghani al-Dihlawi. After every student had died, she remained. So people from everywhere would come and get ijazah and sama’ from her and she would teach in Madinah al-Munawarah.

Now in the whole world there is not a single person who narrates hadith from Amatullah al-Dihlawiyyah. Nobody in India, nobody in Pakistan… nobody. The only person who narrates from Amatullah al-Dihlawiyyah is ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Kattani.”

Abd al-Ghani Dihlawi --- Shah Muhammad Ishaq Dihlawi --- Abd al-Aziz Dihlawi --- Waliullah Dihlawi

This isnad has been the best isnad for the last few hundred years. People from all over the world from Morocco, from Syria, from Iraq, from Haramayn al-Sharifayn they always used to say that there is no isnad better than this Indian isnad. Everybody who you could ask [would say so] because this was the isnad of the biggest ‘ulama.

Introduction to Isnad and Ijazah (2/5)

“People should take ijazah because it makes you a part of the family [of pious learned people]”

In the following video, Shaykh Akram Nadwi explains the difference between ‘ijazah’ and ‘shahadah’ in Islam – the difference between Permission and Qualification.

There are numerous examples of students and scholars travelling all over the world and facing many hardships in pursuit of “high” ijazahs. Imams in this matter are known as ‘musnid’ – meaning they are connected to the prophet (saw) through many established chains.

In the last Century the biggest muhaddith in the world was Shaykh al-Hafiz Muhammad ‘Abd al-Hayy al-Kattani d.(1382). He was from Morocco from Fez and received ijazah from more than 500 shuyukh.

Introduction to Isnad and Ijazah (1/5) | Dr Akram Nadwi

In the Introduction to Sahih Muslim, Imam Muslim writes:

قال عبد الله بن المبارك (رحمه الله تعالى): الإسناد من الدين ولولا الإسناد لقال من شاء ما شاء

Imam Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak said, “Isnad is from our religion. Without the isnad, anyone could say whatever they wanted.” [Muqaddimah, Sahih Muslim]

As part of Al Salam Institute's commitment to reviving this Sunnah of teacher-student licensing, we will be posting a series of videos explaining and detailing the systems of hadith, isnad and ijazah in Islam.
In the following video, Shaykh Akram Nadwi explains the importance of the ijazah-system and its uniqueness and prominence in the history of the religion.

This weekend we will be reading al-Awail al-Sunbuliyyah – a popular and important text for students of hadith – in London with Shaykh Akram Nadwi and Shaykh Muhammad Ayyub Surti.

About Shaykh Ayyub Surti:
Shaykh Ayyub Surti is a senior student of Shaykh Yunus Jaunpuri and possessor of one of the highest and unique Hadith isnads in the United Kingdom. The Shaykh currently holds the position of Shaykh al-Hadith of Dar al-‘Ulum Leicester, UK. In tasawwuf Shaykh Ayyub is a khalifa of Mawlana Abrar ul-Haq Hardoi – one of the last khalifa of Mawlana Ashraf ‘Ali Thanwi.

There is no solution to any problem that is truer, purer or more lasting than the prayer. We think the prayer is a problem and a burden on us, but in reality the prayer is the solution to every problem we have.
