Long Hanborough Community Tree Project
This is a tree project for the children and community of Long Hanborough. Grown-ups are more than welcome to help (#community). Thank you loads!
Any donations towards our trees are much appreciated and can be done via PayPal ([email protected]). In summer 2019 pupils measured the summer heat in the field compared to the coolness in Pinsley Woods and an idea was born - we needed more trees to shade us from the hot sun on our way to Forest School! As a group, we are making a small step towards combating climate change

1) GET IN TOUCH TO GET A TREE
Who can apply: anyone who is happy to plant and water the tree - groups or individuals, a family, group of friends, Primary and Pre-schools as usual
2) PLANT YOUR TREE
Where: in the field towards the Pinsley Woods, or in your front garden, in the back garden or other suitable place
When: from mid December
How: your kids are experts in planting trees so have them teaching you or get in touch if you need any help
What: Bare-rooted organically grown Heritage Dessert Apples (please continue to grow them organically)
3) WATER YOUR TREE in spring and summer if there is no rain. This is the most important part so the trees stay alive and thrive even if the unusual weather arrives.
Amazingly, there are ninety trees available thanks to a generous discount from Kevin, Walcot Organic Nursery in Drakes Broughton, all paid by The Blenheim Bursary Fund. Once all planted, Long Hanborough will have a collection of sixty-two traditional varieties of desert apples on top of what’s in your gardens already, plus some trees will be going to Bladon as well.
This project is worth participating in for many reasons, GET INVOLVED GROWING.

GET IN TOUCH TO GET A TREE
Looking back, we had three great years of planting trees with children aged two to eleven. There were things to learn such as how deep to dig, why not to plant trees in their pot, what is the mulch good for and why to stake and fence off trees in a field. Last autumn no more explanation was needed, children knew how to plant trees and had a fantastic time doing so. This is one of the most important outcomes of the project and we are proud of it! We were never worried about planting hundreds of trees, we just wanted to give kids the opportunity to see how it is done.
All trees were doing really well until this summer where the drought will have caused many casualties. So we had to rethink the best way forward and here are three simple steps to follow if you’d like to join us planting: (see above)
