A little housekeeping: Kim is off on her holidays from 11–19 August (yes, accountants are allowed holidays, we checked the legislation).

The office is still open, and Daisy will be looking after you brilliantly while Kim is away. Anything urgent will be handled; anything non-urgent will get a lovely, refreshed response when Kim is back on the 20th.

Diolch (thank you) for your patience and please don’t all send your paperwork on the 19th!

It’s almost Llanfyllin Show time - Saturday 8 August!

One of our favourite weekends of the year, half our client meetings this week will probably happen next to the livestock pens, and honestly, that’s exactly how we like it.

If you spot us there, come and say hello. We talk about things other than tax. Occasionally.

Welwn ni chi yno! (See you there!)

Quick heads-up for our Making Tax Digital clients...your first quarterly update (covering April to July) is due with HMRC by 7 August.

If you’re with us, peidiwch â phoeni (don’t worry) - we are on it.

If you’re handling MTD yourself, pop that date in your diary now, treat yourself to a paned (cuppa) when it’s submitted, and enjoy the rest of your summer. ☕

You’ve got this!

If your 2025/26 Self Assessment return still needs doing, July is a good time to start gathering the evidence:

P60
P11D, if you received one
bank interest
dividends
rental income and expenses
pension contributions
business income and costs
mileage and working-from-home records
anything unusual that affected your tax year

You do not need to love tax admin.
You just need a clear next step.

Earlier records. Better decisions. Fewer surprises.

If your VAT quarter ended on 30 June, your return and payment deadline will usually fall on 7 August.

That gives you a useful window in July to tidy up the records before the pressure builds.

Check:

sales invoices
purchase invoices
bank reconciliation
receipts
reverse charge or unusual VAT treatment
any missing paperwork

VAT is much easier when the records are dealt with as you go.

It is much harder when you are trying to rebuild a quarter from memory.

Self Assessment reminder: the second payment on account is due by 31 July if this applies to you.

Payments on account are not an extra tax bill. They are payments towards your next Self Assessment bill, usually based on last year’s tax.

That does not make them any more pleasant, but it does make them easier to plan for.

Check your HMRC online account or statement, make sure you know the amount due, and do not leave payment until the last possible minute.

Facing the number early gives you more options.

Employers: Class 1A National Insurance on benefits for 2025/26 needs attention this month.

The payment deadline is 19 July if paying by cheque, or 22 July if paying electronically.

A common practical issue is the payment reference. If the reference is wrong, HMRC may not allocate the payment where you expect it to go.

Before paying, check:

the amount due
the payment method
the Accounts Office reference
the year/month reference required
that the payment will arrive on time

A small admin mistake can create a lot of unnecessary chasing

MTD for Income Tax is no longer “something for later”

If you are a sole traders and or landlord and in the first MTD group from 6 April 2026, your first quarterly update period has now ended.

With the first update dealine 7th August 2026, July is the month to check the list in our post.

The quarterly update is a summary, not a full tax return, but messy records still make it harder than it needs to be.

Get the system calm now, before it becomes a deadline problem.

Today is a key date for employers with reportable expenses and benefits.

P11D and P11D(b) reporting for the 2025/26 tax year is due by 6 July 2026.

That can include things like company cars, private medical cover, beneficial loans and other taxable benefits, depending on the circumstances.

The important bit: do not guess.

Benefits reporting needs proper records, correct treatment and employee copies where required. Clear records now save awkward questions later.

Employers: if you need a PAYE Settlement Agreement for 2025/26, this is one to deal with now.

A PSA can be useful where you want to settle the tax and National Insurance on certain employee expenses or benefits directly with HMRC.

The deadline to apply for, or amend, a PSA for 2025/26 is 5 July 2026.

This is not the job to leave and hope it sorts itself. Check what was provided to staff, check what is already taxed through payroll, and get the position clear.

Need a second pair of eyes? Speak to us before the deadline.
