You don’t need to be able to read music to sing with us.

We learn a lot by listening and repeating. I’ll sing a part, the group sings it back, we break things down into little sections and then gradually put everything together.

And we repeat things. A lot. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with repetition.

We’ve often got rehearsal tracks so people can listen at home if they want to, which really helps.

Some people pick things up immediately, some people need to hear it ten times. It doesn’t matter. Everybody learns differently.

The important thing is that people don’t sit there thinking, “Oh, everyone else understands this and I don’t.” If you don’t understand it yet, we’ll find another way.

5 things only choir members really understand…

1. “One more time.”
You know this does NOT mean once. 😂

2. The panic when the conductor stops conducting.
Are we stopping? Are we carrying on? WHAT IS HAPPENING?

3. Counting rests is a genuine skill.
You’re stood there looking completely relaxed while internally going:
1, 2, 3, 4… 5, 6… was that 7 or 8?! 😳

4. When you’re singing your part and suddenly hear everyone else’s part properly.
And you realise… ohhhhhh. THAT’S what we’re doing.

5. The post-rehearsal feeling.
You arrived tired. You’ve sung for a couple of hours. Your brain is slightly scrambled. And somehow you leave feeling better than when you arrived.

If you know, you know 💙🎶

We’ve been talking a LOT about mash-ups lately… but what actually makes a mash-up a mash-up?

Basically, it’s when two (or sometimes more) songs are combined to create one new musical arrangement.

The interesting bit is making them fit.

Same key? Helpful.

Similar tempo? Handy.

Lyrics that somehow tell a coherent story when you put them together? EVEN BETTER.

The name itself is pretty literal: you’re taking two things and… well… mashing them up.

And we’ve been having some fun with that idea lately. Can't wait to share them with you at Christmas!

When we sing, we start becoming much more aware of our breathing. Where do I take my breath? How much air do I actually need? How do I use that breath all the way through the phrase instead of getting halfway through and completely running out?

Breathing is a core part of warming up as well, so you learn to take relaxed breaths, control the air as you breathe out and think about your posture. And then you put all of that into the song.

I think that’s the lovely thing about it. You’re developing that breath awareness and control while you’re actually making music.

And gradually you start to understand your own voice, and your own breathing a little bit better. Again, everybody’s individual, but it’s another skill that develops through singing.

What skills does a choir leader need besides being able to sing?

I actually think being able to sing is only one part of it.

You’ve got to be able to read people. You need to know when somebody needs encouragement, when people need you to explain something differently, when the whole room needs a laugh because everyone’s getting a bit too serious.

Patience. Definitely patience 😅.

You’ve got to communicate clearly as well because you might know exactly what you want the music to sound like, but that’s no good if you can’t explain it to thirty other people.

And importantly, I think you’ve got to create trust.

For me, a good choir leader gets people making good music, obviously, but also makes people feel welcome and want to come back each week.

I think having something in your week that you know is there can be really important.

Tuesday night, Thursday night, whatever it is, you’re coming to choir, you’re seeing the same people, you’re singing together and hopefully having a good laugh as well.

Over time you get to know people, you build friendships, you build trust, and it becomes part of your community. You know you can turn up, make a mistake, sing the wrong note, whatever, and nobody’s bothered. We all do it.

So I think the choir can become a really reassuring little anchor in somebody’s week. You come in, you sing, you connect with people, and hopefully you leave feeling a bit better than when you arrived.

Quite a lot, actually!

Beforehand I’ll have planned what we’re singing, which bits we need to work on, maybe which harmonies need a bit more attention. I’ll have the music ready, rehearsal tracks, all of that sort of thing.

During the session, obviously I’m teaching the music, but I’m also watching the room.
Are people following? Are they comfortable? Is one section looking completely lost? Do we need to go over something again?
And sometimes you’ve just got to change the plan because what you thought would take five minutes takes twenty.

There’s usually somebody who wants to ask something, have a chat, check a part, and then I’m thinking about what we need to do next week.

So yes, there’s the music, but my focus is on the people there as well. 😊

🎄 Week 2 of Local Vocals Pop Choirs Christmas mash-up rehearsals… and they're sounding SO GOOD! 🎶

We’re not doing your usual Christmas concert this year...

We’re going adventurous.
We’re going wacky.
We’re going silly.
We’re going joyful. 😂🎄🎶
We’re taking songs that absolutely have no business being together… and putting them together anyway.

And somehow, it’s WORKING.

There’s something brilliant about a mash-up. You get the moment where everyone thinks “Hang on… are we really singing THAT with THAT?!” and then suddenly it clicks.

Two completely different songs become something new.

Two weeks in, we’re already hearing some brilliant harmonies, some questionable song combinations and plenty of friendship and laughter.

And honestly? That’s exactly how we like it.

Because Christmas music doesn’t have to be predictable. 💙

So, over to you…

🎵 What’s the most surprising, ridiculous or downright genius mash-up you’ve ever heard?
