What does the 11+ actually assess?

Most people would say it’s about getting the right answer. But there’s much more to it than that.

11+ tests assess a child’s reasoning, problem-solving, comprehension, accuracy and time management, alongside their academic knowledge.

And that's why preparing for the 11+ is about more than completing practice papers.

It's about developing the skills behind the questions — helping children understand concepts, apply what they know and become more confident in tackling unfamiliar problems.

With the new academic year underway, September is a good time to build those skills steadily, rather than leaving preparation until the pressure starts to build.

Recognise the determination they show, especially when things don't go perfectly.

Before exam day, we are celebrating at Focused Mentoring. 🎉

The children have worked hard. They've tackled challenging topics, completed practice papers, sat mock exams and kept going when things didn't come easily.

So we decided to put the papers away for a day and celebrate them.

A day of laughter, games, food, friendship and a well-deserved break from 11+ preparation.
