Are you concerned by recent media articles suggesting that it may soon be more difficult to secure SEND support in schools? All too often schools lack the resources to carry out the thorough assessments required to identify the root causes of observed difficulties. If your child is having problems with reading, writing, spelling or maths, a diagnostic assessment may help to pinpoint risk factors, so both you and school can work together to provide targeted support.

Information about pencil grip development may help you to identify potential difficulties with writing and spelling early on. An inefficient pencil grip may also signal other potential motor problems, and early help will reduce difficulties going forward.

How a child holds a pencil is very important when it comes to letter formation and learning to write, as a functional pencil grip will lead to efficient, pain-free handwriting. The development of a child's pencil grip, however, is a gradual process that will develop as the child grows. Stages of a p...

HANDWRITING DIFFICULTIES
There are so many reasons why a child may struggle to write, each requiring a different remedy. They might struggle to remember the pattern of motor movements to form letters, struggle with layout and positioning due to visual processing problems, or struggle to hold the pencil efficiently for a variety of reasons. Handwriting difficulties are rarely remedied by more handwriting practice, and require specialist assessment to identify the root cause and design an effective intervention.
An independent occupational therapy assessment is often the best way forward in these circumstances.

Use these handwriting activities to help kids work on and imporve handwriting legibility with fun ways to work on letter formation, line use, and placement.
