We believe in keeping sketchbooks and drawing every day to improve observation and drawing skills.

12 Artworks of Christmas: Day Eight

Today’s painting is by American artist Alice Neel. In December 1934 Neel’s partner Kenneth Doolittle, a merchant marine who suffered from o***m addiction, destroyed most of her work in a jealous rage - around 60 paintings, and over 200 drawings and watercolours – something that Neel later described as “a frightful act of male chauvinism: that he could control me completely”.

Neel left their Greenwich Village apartment, and spent the next week in a hotel on 42nd Street, where she painted this snowy cityscape. This painting marked a new beginning for her.

You can see this beautiful work hanging in Rooms 1-5 of our Millennium Wing.

Thinking about a career in Art and Design? Come in and speak to the Art and Design team in SWC on 22nd Aug. In the Omagh Campus we offer a BTEC extended Dip. In Art and Design. Students attend college 3 days a week. The full qualification is a two year course. At the end you will have a portfolio of work suitable for applying for the creative university course of you choice.

If you are interested in Art and Design come and chat to us in SWC Omagh about our one year course BTEC 90 credit Dip. in Art and Design. This is a full time course which is 3 days a week. Learners can progress to a BTEC extended Dip. the following year which will give enough UCAS points to apply for University Degree courses. applications in Admissions office.
