Your scholarship application can be excellent—and your recommendation letters can still get you rejected.

You have the grades.
You have the experience.
You wrote a strong personal statement.
You submitted everything before the deadline.

Then the scholarship committee reads your reference letter...

And your referee is talking about the wrong things.

This happens more often than you think.

Why?

1. You failed to communicate the expectations of the recommendation letter to your recommender.

It is your responsibility to clearly explain what your referee needs to focus on.

You can only do this when you understand what the scholarship awarding institution is asking for.

Some scholarships want academic excellence to be the central focus of the reference letter.

Others may want your leadership skills, research ability, community involvement, professional experience, or potential for impact to be emphasised.

Some may also require information about how long your referee has known you and how recently they have interacted with you.

Explain these requirements clearly to your recommender.

Don't simply send a message saying, "Please, I need a recommendation letter."

Give them the information they need to write a relevant and convincing letter.

2. You requested the recommendation too close to the deadline.

Or you requested it early but failed to follow up.

When referees are given very little time, they may have to write and submit the letter in a hurry.

A good recommendation letter takes time.

Give your referees sufficient notice and send a polite reminder as the deadline approaches.

3. You chose the wrong recommender.

The scholarship asks for an academic reference from a lecturer, but you submit a letter from a community leader.

Or the scholarship wants someone who can speak about your research ability, but your referee has never supervised your academic or research work.

A recommender should not only be someone who knows you.

They should be someone who can speak credibly about the qualities the scholarship is looking for.

Your recommendation letter is a major part of your scholarship application.

Treat it with the same seriousness you give your personal statement, CV, and academic documents.

A strong application deserves strong and relevant references.

Don't let a poorly prepared recommendation letter weaken an otherwise excellent scholarship application.

You can submit a great scholarship easy and still not win.

You do all your writing work, you have all the good grades but your reference letters are either too weak or totally off point; addressing areas of your strength that are irrelevant to the scholarship.

Why does this happen?

1. You failed to communicate the expectations of the recommendation letter to your recommender.

It’s your responsibility to clearly state what he or she needs to focus on. You can only do this if you understand what the scholarship awarding institution is asking for.

Some want academic excellence to be the central point of the reference letter. Others may want your leadership skill emphasised. Some want to know how long your referees have known you for and how recently they have been in touch with you.

Explain these clearly. Don’t just send a message requesting for a recommendation letter.

2. You sent your recommendation request too close to the deadline or sent it early but failed to remind. This leads to hurried submissions which often don’t turn out perfectly.

3. You used the wrong class of recommender.

The scholarship wants a letter from your lecturer, you submitted one from your community leader.

Your recommendation letter is a major part of your application, treat it with all seriousness.

Apple has released iPhone 18 pro, 18 promax and a foldable phone option.

Some people will be getting one or two of those on credit.

Don’t follow them, if the cost is beyond what you can afford.

Remember, having enough money to buy it is not the same as being able to afford it.
