A huge thank you to Oban High School and Developing the Young Workforce dywargyll for organising and supporting today’s Careers Fair.

It was fantastic to meet so many young people, answer questions, and chat about the huge range of opportunities available across the maritime sector; from engineering, offshore energy and marine science to cruise ships, emergency services and life at sea.

The Beat the Bowline Challenge proved extremely popular throughout the day and sparked some healthy competition amongst both students and adults!

🏆 Fastest overall time went to Donald Wilson with an incredible 2.5 seconds. Blink and you’d have missed him.

🚒 Special mention to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, who brought some serious inter-team competitiveness and recorded the fastest service team time of 3.2 seconds.

If you’ve ever thought about a career at sea, or would simply like to find out more about the opportunities available, we’d be delighted to have a chat.

Get in touch at [email protected] or WhatsApp us on 01631 561424.

As we told the students today, there is no right or wrong path into a career. Every experience is a chance to learn, and careers often appear in places you least expect. Keep an open mind, say yes to opportunities, and see where the journey takes you.

😡 Why does boating cost THIS much?!

…but every so often, one comes along that we just have to share.

Huge thank you to Barry for this one:

“Firstly, what a lovely team you are. Made me feel at home from the first day. The course was very well structured and very well presented. I will definitely be recommending Seagrass Marine to my colleagues for future courses. The star team member was of course Elspeth… Thank you.”

We had a great time too, Barry, and we’re glad our Unmanageable Director continues to steal the show 😄

Really appreciate you taking the time to share this, and we look forward to working with you again in the future.

Want to make sure you are operating legally?

Using a VHF radio on a boat, kayak, windsurf, etc? It is a legal requirement to be licensed.

Why not join our course on Saturday 18th April and make sure you’re up to speed.

🚨 Mayday! Mayday! Mayday! 🚨

Being able to keep a calm head in emergency situations at sea will save lives. Correctly operating your VHF radio and understanding when to make a mayday call or a pan pan call, is fundamental to this.

Even if you’re not going far offshore and have a mobile phone, a VHF radio is essential. There’s no guarantee you’ll have signal and wet phones aren’t exactly reliable when you need them most.

Good radio etiquette matters too. Using the correct procedures helps keep channels clear, ensuring you don’t block a genuine distress call from another vessel.

🔎 Did you know?

It is a legal requirement to have a license to use a VHF radio. The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required by law to operate VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any British flagged vessel with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand-held equipment.
