🧮 Happy Ada Lovelace Day 🧮
Today is all about celebrating the achievements of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
Ada Lovelace is considered the world’s first computer programmer. She learned science and mathematics at Kirkby Hall in Kirkby Mallory and loved to visit nearby Hinckley. She became friends and working partners with mathematician Charles Babbage. Babbage is credited with having invented the first mechanical computer, and his continued work in the field with Lovelace led them to proposing its successor - the Analytical Machine.
Lovelace decided to look further into how to programme it to perform tasks and created the most elaborate and complete programme plans created to that point, leading to her being credited as “the world’s first computer programmer.”
A bronze statue of Ada Lovelace has been positioned outside the North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College Hinckley Campus to inspire girls and young women to study science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
It was made possible thanks to volunteers of the Ada Lovelace in Hinckley Community Interest Company with the support of various local residents and interest groups, North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College and Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council.
