If your child is starting Year 10 this September, don’t wait until Year 11 to worry about GCSE Maths.

One of the biggest things I see is students getting through Year 9/10 without fully understanding the basics, and then finding GCSE questions increasingly difficult.

The good news is that Year 10 is a great time to fix those gaps.

A few things I'd recommend parents check:

• Can they confidently manipulate algebra?

• Are they comfortable with fractions, percentages and ratio?

• Can they interpret graphs and worded problems?

• Do they understand why an answer is correct, rather than just remembering a method?

• Are they working at the right level for their target grade?

Getting these foundations right early can make Year 11 revision so much less stressful.
