🌱 My Year to Grow 🌷

Pastel Cuties Summer Club Day 3, we looked ahead to the new school year and explored what we would like to grow in ourselves — from confidence and friendships to new skills, creativity and courage. 💛

Using visual cards to spark ideas, each child created their own “My Year to Grow” garden, with every flower representing something they would like to nurture in the year ahead. 🌸🎨

And just like that… this Thursday will be our FINAL Summer Club session! 🥹🌈

🖌️ Artwork Revisited | Bingham & Walking Together

In Notts Through Chinese Brush, Dr Jeffrey Kwong’s series The Language of Place reimagines familiar Nottinghamshire place names through Chinese calligraphy. These are not literal translations. Instead, they draw on the experience of settling in a new place and discovering new meanings within it.

📍 Bingham — 並行 (Bing Hang)

If Lok Dei Hang is about taking those first steps, Bing Hang is about discovering that we don’t have to walk alone.

並行 means “walking side by side” — with family, friends, neighbours and all the people we meet along the way.

Perhaps this is what The Language of Place is really about:

When an unfamiliar place begins to carry our own stories, it becomes more than a name on a map. Slowly, it becomes part of our lives — and eventually, home. ❤️

🖌️ Artwork Revisited | Nottingham & Keep walking

In the exhibition 'Notts Through Chinese Brush', Dr Jeffrey Kwong’s series The Language of Place reimagines familiar Nottinghamshire place names through Chinese calligraphy. These are not literal translations. Instead, they draw on the experience of settling in a new place and discovering new meanings within it.

📍 Nottingham — 落地行 (Lok Dei Hang)

Inspired by the Cantonese sound of “Nottingham”, the three Chinese characters carry a message of their own:

Arrive. Find your feet. Keep walking.

For those beginning a new life somewhere unfamiliar, perhaps that is exactly what we learn to do — let go of some of the certainties of the past, put our feet firmly on new ground, and move forward one step at a time.

The calligraphy was then transformed into bilingual street plates, designed to look just like the familiar signs we see around Nottinghamshire — placing the two languages, quite literally, side by side.

🎨✨ Another FULL HOUSE at Pastel Cuties Summer Club!

This week we explored COURAGE ⛵💛 — discovering that being brave doesn’t mean having no fear. We can feel scared and still take the next step.

Through our pastel boats, we explored what we can and cannot control, and created our own Power Cards to carry a little courage with us. 🌊✨

Next week is already FULL! 🎉 We now only have spaces available for our final Summer Club session on 27 August.

Wow! Our first session was a full house, filled with creativity, laughter and meaningful conversations. 💛

Today, we journeyed into our own galaxy—exploring what truly supports us, discovering our inner strengths, and expressing them through Japanese Soft Pastel Art.

Every galaxy is unique, just like every child. 🌟

I can’t wait to see where the rest of this creative journey takes us. 🚀

✨ Sneak Peek: What are we creating in our Summer Club?

Tomorrow our Summer Pastel Cuties Club begins! 🎨🚀

Alongside beautiful Japanese Soft Pastel artwork, every child will be creating their own Power Card Deck.

Just like our body needs food, our mind needs fuel too. 💛

When we’re feeling worried, disappointed or lacking confidence, these little cards can become our own power bank—offering gentle reminders of courage, hope and kindness exactly when we need them most.

The best part?

✨ Every deck is personally created and chosen by the child. They decide which words give their own heart strength, making each set completely unique.

I can’t wait to begin this creative journey with our young artists tomorrow. 🌈💛

❤️ What a wonderful weekend!

In just two days, we were delighted to welcome over 200 visitors to Bingham’s first Chinese art exhibition. Your curiosity, encouragement and support made this event truly special. It has been such a joy meeting so many wonderful people, sharing meaningful conversations, discovering the stories behind Chinese art, enjoying authentic Pu-erh tea, and even trying a few Chinese painting techniques together.

This exhibition was organised entirely by volunteers through Neighbourhood Studio CIC, with no external funding or grants. Over 100 visitors joined us today for Notts Through Chinese Brush, Bingham’s first exhibition celebrating traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy.

We were honoured to welcome Professor Veronica Pickering OBE MBS HAC, Lord-Lieutenant of Nottinghamshire, together with Deputy Lieutenants, the Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, local councillors and many wonderful supporters.

One of the most memorable moments came when the Lord-Lieutenant reflected on Dr Jeffrey Kwong‘s interpretation of Bingham as 「並行」(Walking Together), describing it as a beautiful expression of community, belonging and the journey of Hong Kong families making Nottinghamshire their home.

The exhibition also features Ping-kin So’s traditional Chinese landscape paintings inspired by everyday scenes across Nottinghamshire, and Jin Wu‘s contemporary Chinese paintings created using locally gathered natural materials such as chestnuts and berries—bringing together Chinese artistic traditions and the British landscape.

A huge thank you to everyone who visited today and made this opening so special.
