Nottingham will support awareness Royal Life Saving Society UK - RLSS UK great work!

Today, Darren Paffey MP opened a Westminster Hall debate on water safety with a powerful speech, highlighting the recent heart breaking loss of 19 lives, including 13 children, in just one week.

MPs showed cross-party support for government action to prevent drownings. Many MPs shared individual stories from their constituencies, highlighting how drowning has deeply impacted their communities.

Darren welcomed the Daily Mirrorโ€™s campaign, delivered in partnership with RLSS UK, which promotes vital water safety messages and calls for โ€œSamโ€™s Lawโ€. Sam's law would require water safety equipment at high-risk water sites and make stealing or damaging this equipment an aggravated criminal offence.

Lee Pitcher, who has been campaigning alongside Samโ€™s family, spoke movingly about his promise to Samโ€™s father to help save lives.

RLSS UK and MPs are calling for:
โ€ข Recognition of drowning as a preventable public health issue requiring Government leadership and action
โ€ข The appointment of a Minister for Water Safety
โ€ข Water safety policies to prevent drowning

Robbie Moore MP, speaking for the Official Opposition, recognised this is a cross-party issue that has been overlooked by successive governments, adding, "We must work cross-party to ensure that the general public have greater preparedness when it comes to water safety, and I want to reassure all Members that we on this side of the House will work with Government on this issue on behalf of all our constituents.โ€

By combining our expertise in water safety education with strong Government action, we can save lives and ensure everyone can enjoy water safely.

With warm weather forecast this weekend and into next week, more of us will enjoy spending time in, on, or around water, so itโ€™s important to stay safe.

Almost half (47%) of UK accidental drownings happen between May and August, with higher risks during warmer weather.

Keep yourself and your family safe:
โ€ข Check for hazards, including depth, currents, tides, and hidden underwater objects.
โ€ข Stay together and swim in lifeguarded areas.

In an emergency:
โ€ข Call 999 immediately
โ€ข If you fall in or become tired, stay calm, float on your back, and call for help
