Norma Gregory, Honorary Doctorate of Letters recipient for Services to Heritage, Education & Media Arts from the University of Nottingham, my home town university, on the 15th December 2023, where I studied in 2009-2010 as a PGCE student (English teacher training, post-grad) and have since used aspects of this knowledge and experience in my professional practice now as an EDI heritage consultant and educator, leading change to help transform museums, heritage sites across the world and broadcast heritage media production, to become more inclusive, multicultural and diverse learning spaces.

I will continue to lead positive change through heritage, education and the arts, to inspire others on their life journeys towards a more inclusive, equitable society we can and must contribute to, in some way.

Thank you to all those whom I have had the pleasure of working with / liaising with in some way, of my 30+ years of work output/study/impact. I share this award with you. Surreal...

Today marks the 75th Anniversary of the HMT Empire Windrush arriving in Britain on 22 June 1948.

In this interview, Newcastle United legend Andy Cole talks about his dad Lincoln who emigrated to the UK from Jamaica in 1957 and worked as a coal miner in Gedling until 1987.

“My father was one of the first,” says Cole. “He wasn’t an individual who would shout about it. But when he passed away, coming up to a year now, I got to find out just how revered my dad was for being one of the pioneers."

Lincoln was one of the men photographed for the Digging Deeper exhibition as part of the Black Miners Project Coal Miners of African Caribbean Heritage. It explored black miners’ migration memories adjusting to life in the UK; finding work in the collieries; teamwork, camaraderie and discrimination; memories of accident, injuries and death at the colliery; the struggle for industrial and personal survival; legacy and life after mining.

We were very proud to be part of the project and host the exhibition in 2020 and share the stories and contribution they made to the coal mining industry.

PLEASE NOTE THIS EXHIBITION IS NOT CURRENTLY ON DISPLAY AT WOODHORN MUSEUM. You can watch an interview with Norma Gregory about the exhibition here https://vimeo.com/468249544
