Story dice 🎲

This week we used picture dice to help us create a short story.
M loved choosing what the picture she rolled could represent.
This is a great way to activate the imagination and have fun when writing at home.

Why not give it a try? (Search story cubes)

Today we're wishing a VERY happy birthday to Sir David Attenborough!

We know Sir David has inspired so many children to protect the nature around them and across the globe, so we've put together a list of great books to support them!

Some you might like to try include:

🌍 Earth Heroes by Lily Dyu, illustrated by Jackie Lay - this one has got Sir David right on its cover! It explores the stories of 20 inspiring people who have made a difference.

🌍 Kids Fight Plastic by Martin Dorey, illustrated by Tim Weeson - this shares powerful facts about plastic and suggests 50 bitesize missions to try.

🌍 Fashion Conscious by Sarah Klymkiw and Kim Hankinson - a great guide for young teens about ethical fashion.

🌍 Clean Up by Nathon Bryon, illustrated by Dapo Adeola - a wonderful picture book about a young surfer determined to help clean up the beach to protect wildlife.

🌍 How to Teach Grown-Ups About Climate Change by Patricia Daniels, illustrated by Aaron Blecha - a practical and helpful book with lots of great ideas for saving the planet.

Which books would you recommend to budding eco-warriors and activists? 🍃

Board Game Design ✨

This week, I introduced a board game design challenge, completely child-led—and it was a fantastic success!

Here’s what we explored along the way:
• Nets – creating a cube to make our own dice
• Phonics – learning new sounds to write game cards
• Reading – following and understanding the challenges
• Physical development – incorporating activities like handstands, running, and trampoline tasks
• Fine motor skills – folding, cutting, taping, and writing
• Maths – using dice, counting during challenges, and solving maths-based cards
• Critical thinking & problem-solving – designing the game and constructing the nets

A fun and engaging way to bring so many skills together!

Simple counting stories ❤️

Ten Little Dinosaurs is a favourite for under 5s!

Bring ten dinosaurs with you for storytime

Count the dinosaurs and take one away on each page

Count how many are left (line up the dinosaurs and touch each one as you count to ensure you count accurately)

Find the numeral on each page

Use the language "count, total, one less, take away"

Enjoy the way the literacy and maths combine!

Spring book selection... ▶️ Here's a few of the books I've been using in my Spring tutoring sessions for age 3-6 🐰

What are you reading this Easter holiday?

Easter spelling ✨

After sharing an Easter story, we followed the bunny footprints to find hidden words.

We looked at what made some of them tricky (non decodable) and looked for sounds we recognised.

The trickiest was 'goes' it can be read phonetically if you know the 'oe' sound, g-oe-s, but 'A' wanted to split it by remembering the word go- then es.

Remember to explore what the children see, and how this can help with their spelling memory.

I wonder how you'll explore Easter/Spring at home? Share your activities or favourite books below!
