We are delighted to share some exciting news with you...

From next week, we will be welcoming a very special new member to our school community—our school dog, Digby (also known as Mr Barker!), a friendly chocolate Labrador. Digby has already had his first visit to the school, where he settled in beautifully and even spent some time listening to children read—much to everyone’s delight! His calm and gentle nature made a very positive impression on both pupils and staff.

From next week, Digby will be in school every Tuesday. His role will be to support pupils’ wellbeing, confidence, and engagement, particularly in activities such as reading and nurturing positive relationships. Research and experience show that school dogs can have a wonderful impact on children’s emotional wellbeing, motivation, and confidence.

Please be assured that:
🌟Digby is well-trained, friendly, and used to working with children. In fact, he lives with Mrs Barker and her family.
🌟His time and interactions in school will be carefully managed and always supervised.
🌟We will ensure high standards of hygiene and safety are maintained.
🌟Children will always be taught how to behave safely and respectfully around him

We are very much looking forward to the many benefits Digby will bring to our school community—and we hope the children are just as excited to meet him!

Year 5 delivered their parent assembly on the theme of 'Freedom' having been inspired by two fantastic texts covered in our writing units. Freedom Bird by Jerdine Nolan allowed the year 5s to understand the hardships enslaved people had to go through around the time of the American Civil War. The children wrote poems titled 'Freedom is to Fly' and studied the underground railroad - the secret society for getting enslaved people to freedom. The first song is inspired by this movement as 'Sweet Low Sweet Chariot' references someone coming to take the people away from slavery. We sang this alongside two other traditional American songs, 'Oh When the Saints' and 'I Wanna Sing'.

The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Space Race through reading the book Hidden Figures which covered the four Black, inspirational women who helped to make NASA successful in their mission to the moon. Children looked at life lived in segregation and discussed what freedom meant to them. We had a fantastic visit from the Star Dome mobile planetarium to link to our science and space unit; we then rounded the assembly off with our second song about The Planets.
