in 1954, the world lost Alan Turing, a brilliant mind and humanist hero. His groundbreaking work in mathematics and computer science was instrumental to the Allied victory in WWII, yet he faced horrific persecution for his sexuality at home.

Today, we honour his extraordinary contributions and remember the tragic circumstances of his death. His employment with the successor body to Bletchley Park was severed on the grounds of his homosexuality, which rendered him ineligible for security clearance. On 8 June 1954, aged forty-one, Turing was found dead in his Wilmslow home. The inquest ruled su***de by cyanide, a half-eaten apple lying nearby.

It's meet the team time again, introducing our colleague Sophie.

Hi! I am Sophie Reynolds and I am the Educating With Pride Coordinator for the LGBTQ+ Project. My role centres around providing guidance to schools as they work to become more LGBTQ+ aware and inclusive. I am passionate about my work because I know that safe and welcoming schools are fundamental to improving the wellbeing of LGBTQ+ students. LGBTQ+ youth who grow up in supportive environments report improved mental health, increased self-esteem and feeling optimistic about their future. I am encouraged by all of the amazing school staff that I work with who are committed to making sure that all of their students feel seen, heard and supported to be their true, authentic selves. I live in Norwich with my wife and our 6 year-old son.
