Rathfriland Pre-school

Rathfriland Pre-school Rathfriland Pre-school was established in 1983 and currently runs a morning session, five days per week (9am - 12pm) between September and June each year.

The Pre-School is situated in a purpose-built section of Rathfriland Community Centre, and a large, secure garden, solely for pre-school use is situated behind the building. The setting is inspected on a regular basis by the Department of Education Inspectorate and also the Early Years Team within Newry & Mourne Health & Social Care Trust. The Pre-School offers a safe, welcoming and enriching envi

ronment, extending the children's learning experiences, promoting their social skills and learning through play, and at all times ensuring the activities are developmentally appropriate. The setting follows the Pre-School Curriculum, as set out by the Department of Education. The topic based curriculum centres around the six areas, as listed below, and focuses on the needs of the child, promoting children's choice and providing opportunities to develop their full potential. It also encourages the children to discuss and recall their own experiences, through topics including 'Myself', 'Farming', 'Christmas', 'People Who Help Us', and 'Healthy Eating'.

*Personal, Social & Emotional Development
*Language Development
*The Arts
*Early Mathematical Experiences
*The World Around Us
*Physical Development & Movement

A range of activities are available on a daily basis for the children, including sand, water, painting, art activities, play dough, dressing-up, stories, construction, writing and physical play activities. Highly trained staff carry out observations on the children in the setting, focusing on the six areas, to ensure that progress and development is recorded and specific to the individual needs of each child. Children are assigned a 'key worker' on entering the setting, who will carry out the observations on a group of children throughout the pre-school year. Parents can arrange to meet with staff throughout the year to discuss their child's progress, and meetings are also held with parents in November, February and June, with a Transition Form being compiled by the child's key-worker in June, to be passed on to the primary school. This allows the Primary 1. teacher to become familiar with the child's development and progress when they move settings. The setting is run by a voluntary committee, consisting of parents whose children attend, or have attended the group. We would encourage parents to join the committee, and an invitation is open to every parent to become involved in the future of the setting and their child's education. The Committee meet on a monthly basis, in the pre-school setting, and are responsible for overseeing a variety of aspects of the setting, including fundraising, training, recruitment and employment of staff etc.

🀩What a fantastic month we have had in Rathfriland Pre-School!! Please take a look at some of the fun, busy times in June.

The children caught World Cup fever, designing their own colourful football kits and showing off their creativity.

The travel agents role play area was buzzing with busy holidaymakers booking exciting trips with lots of wonderful imaginative play.

We had a great time at Mountpanther on our Pre-School trip...the rain certainly wasn't going to spoil our fun day out.

There were some amazing Lego and construction creations, with fantastic teamwork and problem solving on display.

To cool us down on the very warm days, everyone enjoyed some delicious ice cream - the perfect summer treat! 🌞🍦

It was also lovely to see so many special friendship moments as the children played learned and laughed together. ❀️

Particular thanks to Raymie and Luke for preparing the hunt and the story time at the end. Thank you also to Natasha for ensuring we had a sweet treat at the end of the hunt for each and every Gruffalo's child.

Thank you,

🌟The month of May has been full of adventure, learning, laughter and lovely sunny days. 🌟
The children have enjoyed so many exciting experiences and we loved hearing them say "This is the best day ever!" on many occasions this month.
As part of our People Who Help us learning, we were delighted to welcome some very special visitors. A huge thank you to Catherine for coming to speak to the children about her job as a Vet 🐾. The children loved exploring the equipment and role playing as a vet caring for all the teddy animal patients. The children's smiles and excitement to play as a Vet was lovely to see.
The PSNI and Firefighter visits were also thoroughly enjoyed by the children. The opportunity to try on the Police and Firefighter uniforms, explore inside their emergency vehicles and learn about how they keep us safe was so much fun. Having a turn with the hose was definitely a favourite activity! These exciting experiences inspired lots of imaginative play with lots of budding Police Officers and Firefighters in Pre-School afterwards. πŸš“πŸš’
We are so grateful to everyone who gave up their time to visit and share their professions. These visits were so important in bringing the children's learning to life during our topic of People Who Help Us.
A huge thank you also to those who helped organise these wonderful experiences and to those who helped during the visits.
These "best days ever" were topped off with some lovely ice-cream treats🍦during the lovely sunny days to help us keep coolβ˜€οΈ.
Here's a little look at some of the fun and learning we have shared this month. πŸ˜ƒ

🌍 Happy Earth Day! 🌱

This week at Pre-School, we have had so much fun celebrating our amazing planet! The children got creative with arts and crafts; making cotton bud and tissue paper Earth's . They made their very own playdough Earths 🌎 and explored the colours of land and sea.

We also took a little trip around the worldβ€”learning about different homes and foods from other countries, and discovering how people live in places near and far. 🌏🏠🍲

Closer to home, we talked about our own town of Rathfriland, sharing what makes it special to us and how we can help take care of it every day. πŸ’š

It’s never too early to learn how to love and protect our world!
