As teachers we give feedback to students to help them grow and improve, so why wouldn’t we ask students to do that for us??

Here is some feedback from students who attended the recent group AS Unit 2 intensive revision class. It’s great to see all the positive feedback on what students found useful, but even more important are the ideas for what I could do to make the class even better for next time. I took on board the comments and amended my A2 Unit 1 intensive revision class for today to include more opportunity for students to complete some questions and give them more feedback. And it went great! 🙌🏼

We only have one more intensive revision class for A2 Unit 2 coming up on Tuesday 9th at 9-10:30am. If you would like to secure a place please get in touch!

Some of this week’s scribblings in our CCEA AS2 revision classes! 🖊️📊

As we’ve been going through questions in past papers, we’ve been practising:
- our AO2 highlight/recall/link technique
- data analysis of graphs and tables
- techniques for analysing question wording and requirements
- using mark schemes to be sure of appropriate wording and terms
… and of course revising content!

It’s been a hectic week but as we move closer to next week’s AS2 exam we are feeling more and more confident! 🤗

(NB. For those of you doing AS2 as a resit, remember: DO NOT pause your revision for A21 & 2 this week, you need to keep ticking along with a bit of revision for those topics as well as they will come along very quickly after AS2!)

PAST PAPERS... HOW BEST TO USE THEM? 🧐

As we edge ever closer to the exams, you may feel the temptation to cram in as many past papers as you can boom-boom-boom one after the other to help you learn the material, but you need to have learned as much BEFOREHAND as possible so that you can really get the most out of each paper and be able to properly practise the different exam skills.

💡So here's my advice for how to use our precious past papers the most effectively:

📖1. REVISE. Thoroughly, to the point where you feel you know everything as best you can (NB. you probably don't yet!)
📝2. Get your first past paper and complete it with no notes (you don't have to do it all in one sitting, but the important thing is to do it without looking up any answers!)
✅3. Self-assess using the mark scheme. The important takeaway here is NOT your mark... it's the gaps in your knowledge, the questions that you got WRONG.
💭4. Go back to your revision and focus this time only on the areas where you had gaps in the your understanding. Try a different active revision technique this time to see if it works better.
📝5. Get a new past paper and complete again with no notes.
🔄6. Keep repeating and each time you should find the number and scope of gaps goes down!

This whole process should take weeks, as you need sufficient time between papers to go back and try understanding and learning the material better than last time. If you start now, you will have completed most of the past papers by the time of your first exam (perhaps with the exception of Biology AS1, which is only a few weeks away!)

Well, that‘s it for this year’s Easter revision classes!

We’ve covered a whole host of content and skills over the last few weeks, including:
- learning and practising the 3-step technique for A-level AO2 Application questions in Biology
- reviewing the core practicals and common exam questions that come up in Paper 3 for AS and A-level Biology
- recapping the main theories and key research for the four topics from Year 1 Psychology
- learning some common, easily applicable AO3 Evaluation points that we can use for a range of theories and research across the Psych course - cutting down hugely on what we need to revise!

Well done to all the students who gave up time over Easter to put in the extra work. Not long now until study leave arrives!

This evening I had three back-to-back 1:1 lessons with students all revising similar CCEA A-level Biology topics. Did I just roll out the same lesson for each of them? 🤔
