Failure to plan is planning to fail.

Even when studying English.

It’s important to know where you want to get to and then work backwards.

English can feel wafty and hard to pin down ( students words not mine 🤗)

But you can be systematic and strategic.

You can revise English Language

You can break down what you need to do into small steps.

This is what I love to do 💙 ❤️

All my students have a clear plan with active revision tasks to move them closer to their goals.

This feels crazy to say, but let’s dive in:

I got this message: “He got a 7 in lang and lit! We are so pleased and surprised! To go from a 3 and 2 in September to this is beyond belief! I don’t think he would have even passed without you!” 30 marks above his mocks.

What happened?

I didn’t ask him to follow his ideas to write more. I showed him the mark scheme. We built every answer around a scaffold that breaks the mark scheme down for each question. This scaffold mirrors exactly what examiners reward.

But here’s the irony. This student was told that USING THIS STRUCTURE WILL STOP YOU FROM GETTING A HIGH MARK.

I hear this time and time again - but it is wrong.

1. Students have to use the scaffold first, like a formula
2. In time, they will understand each part of the scaffold.
3. Only then can they finally use it creatively and secure top marks.

You have to start where your student is at, not where you want them to end up!

Boring habits that actually move a grade. Not “revise more.”

This is what your child needs to do differently.

🤗 Circle the command word before you write a word.

Not “read the question”; circle analyse, explain, compare, evaluate. Most marks are lost because you don’t state your point of view.

🤗 Plan the POINT before you write anything else.

No exceptions. This habit stops the waffle.

🤗Mark your answer against the mark scheme. This is what makes the marks visible.

🤗 Time every answer. Look at the marks on offer, every time you answer a question.

It’s the difference between pacing an exam and running out of time on the big mark questions.

🤗 Go back to the last exam script and do the paper again.

This helps you focus on skill development.

None of this is exciting.
All of it works.

It’s time to gently revise without revising this Summer.

These are my favourite 3.

01 — Audiobook in the car.

Put the text on while you’re driving anyway.
No extra time carved out, no fight required just re-exposure to the story while it plays in the background.

02 — Watch the film adaptation together, as a film night. It still counts.

Knowing the plot and characters is half the battle before September.

03 — The 5-minute sticky note.

One past-paper question.
One sticky note.
5 minutes.
Done.

None of this eats into your summer.

All of it counts.
