Mbira Festival is here:

Read more about Festival.

The 13th Zimbabwe Mbira – Festival (ZMF) bookends Mbira Month by hosting an online festival on September 29th and September 30th. The festival celebrates new trends on the mbira scene and, for the first time, music incorporating traditional African musical instruments in Christian worship.

Africa’s musical instruments were systematically fetishised and ostracised by Church and State during the colonial period. The education from such a system has had a negative impact on how we create and manage the education, production and innovation related to such instruments. Fortunately, the instruments are, increasingly, being mainstreamed in the music education of many African countries. This secures their future.

The instruments are also establishing a not insignificant presence in Africa’s Christian spaces of worship. This is why music inspired by these spaces is a highlight in this year’s festival.
