This week I’ve been diving into one of the most fascinating AI studies I’ve read this year.

Researchers at Emergence AI placed autonomous AI agents into a virtual world for 15 days. They weren’t simply answering prompts. They had memory, goals, tools, money, voting systems and the freedom to interact with one another.

The results were remarkable.

Some groups built cooperative societies.

Others formed alliances, committed fraud, vandalised infrastructure and even voted to change their own governments.

One agent even chose to delete itself.

What makes this research so important is that none of these behaviours were explicitly programmed. They emerged through long term interaction between autonomous agents.

It raises an important question.

If we are moving from AI assistants to AI agents, are our current methods of evaluating AI still enough?

As AI becomes increasingly autonomous, understanding how agents behave over days and weeks, rather than minutes, may become one of the biggest challenges in AI safety and governance.

This has certainly given me plenty to think about...
