I’m 24 and have already realised I have to diversify with my YouTube, merchandise, Pumpkin Patch & Maize Trail to keep me going in farming.

Yields are down, with 3 bad harvests in the last 6 years. Will we start to see farmers putting more productive land into SFI schemes? Selling up? Or farming wind and solar?

A real pleasure to welcome Charlotte Smith and the BBC Countryfile team to the farm to talk about the impact this year’s drought has had on farming.

From 3am starts and reduced yields to the very real risk of fires, it’s been an incredibly challenging season and one that highlights just how vulnerable farming is to changing weather conditions. Rookery Farms - FC Cummins & Sons

We also met Dr John Redhead, Spatial Ecologist at the, UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology - UKCEH who talked us through his future crops modelling study, using our farm to explore what agriculture could look like in a changing climate.

🧡Pumpkin Update 🧡

The pumpkin patch has been hard work again this year.

The added pressure of the drought has made growing this year particularly challenging.

We’ve been hand-weeding the patch to keep the pumpkins growing as naturally as possible — and to give you a truly organic and authentic experience of some of the challenges farmers are facing when growing food this year.

We’re also adapting to what Mother Nature has thrown our way by making the most of the rainfall, carefully managing the soil and plants, and adjusting our growing methods to help the patch thrive in changing conditions.

It’s certainly been a challenging season, but we’re doing everything we can to make the patch the best it can be. 🌱🎃

ONE tractor couldn’t do it… so we brought TWO! 🚜🚜🔥
Last time, the John Deere 4455 gave it everything trying to move the burnt-out 12-tonne JCB forklift… but it wasn’t going anywhere.
So this time we called in some backup!
Two tractors, one very heavy JCB and another attempt to finally get it moving.
