Narrated Sahl bin Saสฟad that:
They [i.e. the Prophet's companions] did not take as a starting date for the Muslim calendar, the day the Prophet ๏ทบ had been sent as an Apostle, nor the day of his death; rather the day of his arrival at al-Madinah.
Narrated by al-Bukhฤrฤซ 3934
On the authority of Saสฟฤซd ibn al-Musayyab, he said: โ สฟOmar gathered the people and asked them: โFrom what day should history bewritten?โโ
สฟAlฤซ ibn Abฤซ แนชฤlib said: Since the day the Messenger of Allah ๏ทบ migrated and left the land of polytheism,
So สฟOmar - may Allah be pleased with him โ adopted that.
Narrated by al-แธคฤkim (4339)
On the authority of al-Shaสฟbฤซ, that Abลซ Mลซsฤ al-Ashสฟarฤซ wrote to สฟOmar - may Allah be pleased with him -: โWe receive letters from you that have no date!โ
So, สฟOmar gathered the people [and consulted them].
Some of them said: โWe can start the history, from the time of the commencement of Prophethood.โ
Some of them said: โโฆfrom the date from the hijrah (migration).โ
สฟOmar said: โThe hijrah (migration) differentiated between truth and falsehood.โ So, they chronicled it.
That was in the year seventeen after hijrah.
When they agreed on that part, some of them said: โStart with Ramadan!โ
สฟOmar said: โRather, in Muแธฅarram. It is the people's departure from their Hajjโ. So they agreed on it.

Of the nice things that I noticed in the masajid of Mosul is this sign, reminding the one who enters to say: "I intend I'tikaaf as long as I am in the masjid" ; and therefore adding more reward to entering and going to the masjid.
A further addition by al-Jifry is also beautiful. Which is to say: "I vow to do i'itikaaf as long as I am in the masjid"; which elevates the action from a recommended one to an obligation; and hence more reward.

Masjid al-Salam: one of the large purpose built masasjid of Rotterdam. A beautiful masjid adding to the architecture of the city and becoming one of the monuments of this city.

On the authority of AbdUllah bin Amr who said:
The Prophet ๏ทบ said:
โThe first of this nation were saved through yaqฤซn (certainty) and zuhd (asceticism).
And the end of this nation will be destroyed by miserliness and [false] hope.โ
