Today is World Mental Health Day. πŸ’š

We recognise that poor mental health can affect anyone, including our students, families, and staff. If you or someone you know is struggling, please remember that support is available. Reach out to friends, family, colleagues, or professional services.

Together, let's continue to break down stigma and ensure that mental health is treated with the same importance, care, and compassion as physical health.

Talking to a pupil about their wellbeing can feel daunting, particularly when you are unsure what to say or worried about hearing something concerning.

Our latest guide reminds educators that they do not need to be specialists to provide meaningful support.

The guide explores:
β€’ Building warm, trusting relationships
β€’ Choosing a safe and appropriate place to talk
β€’ Using side-by-side conversations to reduce pressure
β€’ Staying calm when a pupil shares a concern
β€’ Being clear and honest about confidentiality
β€’ Knowing when to involve safeguarding colleagues or seek support yourself

It also includes practical conversation starters to help staff open discussions gently and give pupils space to talk when they are ready.

We were informed over the weekend that Kate Hesketh, Head of Year 7, has passed away following a short illness.

We send our condolences to Mrs Hesketh's family and keep them in our thoughts and prayers.

Mrs Hesketh has served Pendle Vale and its predecessor school, Walton High, for many years and in doing so has taught generations of families in Nelson and the surrounding area.

Students will come to terms with this in their own way and in their own time, and our normal systems in school are expert at identifying and supporting with this should the need arise.

If you or your child feels like they would benefit from additional support, we always recommend ChildLine and Kooth as expert services in this field.

We will communicate any plans to celebrate Mrs Hesketh's life in due course.
