👋 Apprentice Spotlight: Harrison

As we wrap up our Meet the Team series, meet Harrison, now in his second year and making excellent progress on the shop floor and his career.

You may remember Harrison from our earlier content. Since then, he’s not only strengthened his practical skills in welding and fabrication, but also achieved Sheet Metal Apprentice of the Year at Burnley College’s Themis Apprenticeship Programme — a fantastic recognition of his dedication and growth.

💬 “I’ve gone from learning the basics in college to welding complex parts on the shop floor, it’s a big step, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”

This is why apprenticeships matter. They’re not just a route into engineering, they build capability, confidence and long-term contribution.

At GEL, investing in early careers is core to our role as a partner in safety-critical sectors. We’re building a future-ready workforce, where precision, reliability and professionalism are part of the culture from day one.

👏 Congratulations to Harrison and all our apprentices.

👋 Meet Corey – Apprentice Spotlight
Corey has now completed his first year at Burnley College and is firmly part of the workshop team at GEL. Learning on the job, gaining confidence and building his skills with every task, Corey reflects the transition from classroom to real-world engineering.

He’s the third apprentice we’ve introduced in our spotlight series. His focus for the year ahead is developing his finishing skills and building the attention to detail required for customer-ready components.

💬 “You don’t need to know everything on day one. Ask questions, make mistakes, learn fast and improve. That’s what working here has taught me.” – Corey

It’s great to hear that Corey feels supported in his learning journey, knowing there’s always someone there to help builds both confidence and capability.

His ambition to strengthen his finishing skills is exactly the mindset we value at GEL. In safety-critical manufacturing, quality is non-negotiable, and developing an eye for detail is key.

From Concept to Delivery.

Engineered and manufactured with precision.
We don’t just produce component parts; we deliver trusted manufacturing solutions. From early-stage design through to low-volume production, we build confidence into every step.

Here’s how we make that happen:
🔹 Early Technical Engagement

We collaborate with customers at the earliest stages. By understanding design intent, operational environment and product lifespan, we advise on materials, weld mapping, manufacturing routes, inspection and testing — reducing risk and improving outcomes.

🔹 In-House Manufacturing
All processes take place under one roof. From laser profiling and deep draw pressing to large-scale machining (up to 8.5 metres) and complex fabrication, we retain control of quality and delivery.

🔹 Certified Welding
Robotic and manual welding supported by recognised approvals:
DIN 2303 Q2 BK1, EN 1090 (EXC2 to EXC3), and ISO 3834-2.

🔹 Inspection and Validation
In-house CMM, laser scanning and X-ray inspection ensure every part meets specification, with no compromise on quality.

🔹 Traceability and Documentation
Every component is delivered with full material and process traceability, inspection records and quality documentation to support performance throughout its service life.

👋 Meet the Team: Apprentices at Graham Engineering Ltd
Next up in our Q&A spotlight series is George, one of our second-year apprentices who recently transitioned from college to the factory floor.

George reflects on adapting to the demands of the workplace, developing practical skills, and his ambitions for the year ahead, including passing his weld test and taking on more complex press brake work.

What stands out? His hands-on mindset and determination to grow:
🗨 “College taught me the theory, but it’s in the factory where I’ve really learned how to do the job and that’s the part I enjoy most.”

At GEL, apprenticeships aren't just a start they’re a strategic investment in the future of UK manufacturing.

🔹 Practical experience builds capability
🔹 Ongoing development supports innovation
🔹 Hands-on learning prepares the next generation of engineers

Apprentices like George are helping strengthen the future of high-integrity UK engineering alongside our skilled staff.

👋 Meet the Team: Apprentices at Graham Engineering Ltd
After completing their first year at Burnley College, our second-year apprentices have now made the transition onto the shop floor. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be introducing each of them, highlighting not just the skills they’re building but the people behind the roles.

We begin with Eric, who shares his reflections on the journey so far in our latest carousel.

At Graham Engineering, apprenticeships are more than a career start, they are part of our long-term commitment to building capability and developing the next generation of engineers.

As the defence and nuclear sectors grow, so does the demand for skilled professionals. Government and industry investment in training, skills academies and manufacturing pathways reflects the critical need for a resilient, future-ready workforce.

Why it matters:
🔹Apprenticeships build real experience
🔹Upskilling supports innovation and quality
🔹Manufacturing offers long-term, impactful careers
Investing in engineering skills today is critical to delivering the programmes of tomorrow.

What’s happening here?
Our press operator is forming a stainless steel body panel, precision-shaped from laser-profiled 304 material, just 1.2mm thick.

This panel includes apertures, location features and both internal and customer-specific identification, laser etched for full traceability.

At this stage: the flat panel is pressed to form a radius and fin. Next steps include rib forming and spot welding, each operation carried out on controlled batches to ensure consistency.

Why it matters:
️ ✔️Precision at part level means reliability at assembly level
✔️ Every detail is documented, traceable and repeatable
✔️ Our processes are engineered for consistency in low-volume, high-integrity production

This is just one example of the technical depth and disciplined manufacturing capability that underpins our role in highly regulated sectors.

Graham Engineering Ltd were pleased to visit the Sellafield site for an in-depth tour and technical discussion with our customer.

Opportunities like this provide valuable insight into the scale, complexity and precision required to operate safely in one of the most highly regulated environments in the UK. They also deepen our understanding of the challenges involved and the integrity required in every component we manufacture.

Paul Waring, Chief Commercial Officer, commented, “This visit gave us a true appreciation of the contribution we make in partnership with Sellafield. It reinforces the value of the components we engineer, the strength of collaboration and the real difference it makes, not just to the Nuclear sector, but to the UK as a whole. A new realisation of why Nuclear safety is so important.”

Thank you to our hosts for an insightful and valuable visit.
