What an incredible final two weeks we’ve had at the Beacon SEMH Base!
Our topic, All Creatures Great and Small, has inspired lots of creativity and hands-on learning. The children have designed their own insects, created mini-beast hotels, and even made delicious “wiggly worm” mud pots during cooking activities.

We have also said goodbye to four amazing pupils as they move on to their next adventures. We are so proud of everything they have achieved and wish them every success and happiness for the future. 🌟

At The Beacon SEMH Base, both classes have now completed the dinosaur section of our *All Things Great and Small* topic by painting the most beautiful watercolours of their favourite dinosaur, the outcomes look wonderful on the artist gallery. We have now excitedly moved onto… 🐞🕷️ **Minibeasts!**

We started by sharing all the fascinating facts we already knew before designing our very own bug hotels. The pupils carefully thought about different compartments and materials to create the ultimate cosy homes for our tiny visitors. We can’t wait to begin building them! 🪵🍂

The children also enjoyed an exciting minibeast hunt around the grounds, where they discovered spiders, ants, snails… and even a frog! 🐸 The excitement and teamwork throughout the hunt was wonderful to see. We have also begun our new garden project with the support of Norfolk Gardens Trust 🌱 The pupils are looking forward to growing wildflowers to support pollinators, as well as fruits and vegetables that we can enjoy together. We have added a bird bath and bee cups too, helping to keep both birds and minibeasts hydrated during the warmer weather.

It has been lovely making the most of the sunshine with outdoor play! ☀️⚽ Spending time outdoors and being active can have a hugely positive impact on children with SEMH needs — exercise and sunlight can help improve mood, reduce anxiety, support emotional regulation, build confidence, and encourage positive social interaction.

A huge thank you to The Red Lion Hotel for sponsoring a surfboard for the Cromer Crab and Lobster Festival 🦀🏄 One of our talented pupils proudly created the design, carefully mixed the paints to create the perfect shades, and painted the board before finishing it with some fantastic Jackson Pollock-inspired splats! 🎨 If you would like to see this amazing piece of artwork, please take a walk past The Red Lion Hotel in Cromer for a viewing.

With SATs approaching, we know some children may be feeling worried or anxious. We remind pupils that it’s okay to feel nervous and encouraging them to:
💛 Take deep breaths when feeling overwhelmed
💛 Get plenty of sleep and eat well
💛 Talk to a trusted adult about their worries
💛 Remember to try their best — that is always enough
💛 Make time for movement, play, and relaxation

We are so proud of how hard all our pupils continue to work every day. 🌟

It’s been such a joyful, busy two weeks in our SEMH SRB to kick off the summer term ☀️

Our new topic All Creatures Great and Small has captured everyone’s imagination—especially the dinosaurs! 🦕 We’ve been exploring herbivores, carnivores and omnivores, and the children have been completely wowed by the sheer size of some of these incredible creatures.

Creativity has been flowing too—we made our own fossils using salt dough and paint, and we’ve started building 3D dinosaur sculptures (which have been very exciting and a little messy… just how we like it 🎨).

As we shared earlier, our trip to Norwich Castle Museum was a real highlight. The children are still talking about it, which is always the sign of a meaningful experience 🏰

Cooking has linked beautifully with our learning. Last week, we had great fun making volcano treats using rice cereal, marshmallows and icing 🌋 This week, we created filled wraps linked to different “vores”—ham, cheese, fish or salad—and enjoyed eating them together in the sunshine 🥙

Alongside all of this, we’ve continued to prioritise what matters most in SEMH: making time to talk, exploring feelings, building relationships, taking movement breaks, and engaging in sensory activities. These moments are just as important as the learning—they help our pupils feel safe, regulated, and ready to succeed 💛

A fantastic start to the term—well done to our amazing pupils and dedicated team!

🏰✨ The Beacon’s Visit to Norwich Castle! ✨🏰

What an amazing day we had on our trip to Norwich Castle!

We started by exploring the original foundations of the castle and even stood above a very deep well (safely behind glass!)—our pupils were incredibly brave 👏

Next, we experienced the castle’s immersive projection show, where medieval history was brought to life through incredible audio and visuals. It sparked so much awe and curiosity!

Throughout the day, we packed in so much learning without even realising it—history, art, science, and more! Pupils explored the art gallery, created crayon rubbings, tried on togas, and discovered fascinating exhibits including an Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus, a Boudicca display, and everything from dinosaur bones to tiny insects 🦖🐜

There were also some favourites like the giant polar bear, beautiful birds, unusual teapots, and lots of creatures great and small.

We even enjoyed lunch inside the castle, which made the day feel extra special 🥪

Most importantly, this trip was fantastic practice for our social skills—being out in public, exploring together, and supporting each other throughout the day. We are so proud of how everyone represented The Beacon 🌟

What a lovely last week before the Easter holiday! 🐣 Our pupils have wrapped up their Past and Present topic by comparing the adventures of Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong — from sailing the seas to walking on the moon! 🌍🚀

Lavender Class delved into the world of ancient Egypt and learned all about Howard Carter and his amazing discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb! 🏺 The pupils loved it so much, they’ve been retelling the facts over and over — true historians in the making!

Both classes worked as a team to plant Sweet Williams, Candytuft's and sunflowers! Staff planted sunflower seeds too; we cannot wait to see how they have grown over the break.

Next term, we’re diving into All Creatures Great & Small, focusing on Dinosaurs and Minibeasts 🦖🐞 — can’t wait!

This week also had an extra sprinkle of Easter magic: 🐰✨

An Easter Egg Hunt
An Easter-themed scavenger hunt
And the joy of welcoming families for Easter bonnet making, bag decorating, and cupcake decorating 🎨🧁

Our pupils were thrilled to make core memories with their loved ones — moments we’ll all treasure. 💛

A gentle reminder: The Beacon will be closed tomorrow as staff take time for their own learning (after all, you’re never too grown-up to learn 😉). We look forward to welcoming pupils back on 14th April.

Have a safe, happy, and wonderful Easter! 🌷🌸

At our SEMH Base, learning goes far beyond the classroom. Everything we do is designed to support our pupils’ emotional well-being, confidence, and ability to regulate themselves—as well as their academic progress.

💛 Bluebell Class have been exploring space and learning about Neil Armstrong, finishing their papier-mâché planets with great pride. Creative activities like this help pupils to express themselves, build patience, and experience a sense of achievement.

They’ve now moved on to learning about Christopher Columbus, thinking about long sea journeys and what they might need to stay safe and prepared. This kind of learning encourages pupils to develop empathy, imagination, and problem-solving skills.

Cooking has been a real highlight—making cornbread muffins and mac and cheese bites. Cooking supports independence, teamwork, and confidence, while also giving pupils a chance to practise following instructions and trying new things.

🌸 Lavender Class have been immersing themselves in Ancient Egypt, writing creative stories and practising hieroglyphics. Through storytelling, pupils are able to process thoughts and emotions safely and imaginatively.

Their clay work—creating tablets and pyramids—has supported focus, fine motor skills, and emotional regulation, as hands-on activities can be calming and grounding. Designing Usekh collars allowed pupils to express creativity while building self-esteem and pride in their work.

🌈 Across both classes, we place a strong focus on wellbeing and regulation.

🧘 Seated yoga helps pupils to feel calm, centred, and ready to learn

🏃 Physical activity like running and basketball supports mood, energy levels, and social interaction

🎢 The sensory swing provides a safe space for pupils to regulate and reset

💬 We’ve also been exploring what it means to be a kind friend. Pupils shared that kindness means being funny, understanding, and having shared interests—a lovely reflection of their growing social awareness.

💐 Creating Mother’s Day bowls gave pupils the chance to reflect on relationships and express appreciation—supporting emotional literacy and connection.

📚 From visiting the book fair to working together to build a number line, our pupils continue to develop confidence, teamwork, and resilience every day.

We are incredibly proud of how our SEMH Base pupils are growing—not just in their learning, but in their confidence, kindness, and ability to understand themselves and others 🌟

What a fantastic week we’ve had at the Beacon SEMH Base! 🌟

Our pupils have been busy with lots of exciting learning and activities. We enjoyed some great cooking sessions, celebrated World Book Day with stories and creativity, and saw some brilliant learning across our classes.

Bluebell Class have been exploring Neil Armstrong and space, discovering what it takes to be an astronaut and learning about the moon landing 🚀🌙.
Meanwhile, Lavender Class have been diving into the fascinating world of the Ancient Egyptians, learning about their history, culture, and incredible achievements.

We’re so proud of all the hard work, curiosity, and enthusiasm shown by our pupils this week. Well done everyone! 👏

✨ First Week Back at The Beacon SEMH Base! ✨

We’ve had a fantastic start to the term, celebrating two pupil birthdays 🎉 and diving into our new topics: Past and Present!

💙 Bluebell Class have been exploring space 🌌 and focusing on Neil Armstrong. Pupils have written their own space stories, learned amazing space facts, and got creative with galaxy playdough and a beautiful rocket ship! In the Haven, the space projector amazed everyone — their awe was infectious. During cooking, we made space rocks 🥄, with everyone showing great care using the hand mixer.

💜 Lavender Class have started their Ancient Egypt topic 🏺. They painted on papyrus paper, explored hieroglyphics, and even wrote their names in symbols! Pupils have loved discovering all the fascinating facts from this period.

🍜 Both classes also celebrated Chinese New Year by making Chinese noodles, giving their best try at using chopsticks — what a fantastic fine motor skill! Thank you, Claire, for leading the session. We also made fantastic Chinese dancing dragons and had a great try at writing our names using Chinese Hanzi!

🐦✨ Blue Tit visitors! We spotted groups of Blue T**s at our windows, so we made bird feeders using lard, bird seed, and pine cones 🌲🥄🐦. We hung them in the trees so all our feathered friends could enjoy a tasty snack! 🍽️💛

🌟 Outside, children enjoyed playing with our flying rocket, taking turns, and practising catching skills. Plus, we’ve had some big body movement fun: hopping like rabbits, stomping like gorillas, and jumping like frogs! 🐇🦍🐸

A positive first week back — it’s so wonderful to see happy, engaged children exploring, learning, and having fun!

🌟 The Beacon SEMH Base – End of Half Term Update 🌟

We have finished the half term by celebrating Children’s Mental Health Week! 💛 Throughout the week, we have explored many different topics related to mental health, including Dan Siegel’s hand-flipping model 🖐, focusing on kindness 💕, ways to help our bodies feel calm 🧘, team games 🤸‍♂️, and even baking 🍪.
One of our amazing pupils left today 💖, and we marked the occasion by starting the day with a full English breakfast 🍳 (thank you Mrs Mackenzie for cooking it!) and finishing with pepperoni pizza 🍕 and cake 🎂. Lots of movement and fun 🏃‍♀️🏃 were enjoyed throughout the day.

We hope everyone has a happy and healthy week off 🌈✨ and we look forward to starting our new topics on 23rd February 📅.

Bluebell Class 🌊 – Neil Armstrong 🚀 and Christopher Columbus⛵

Another two weeks of learning and growing! 🌱

We have loved investigating Handa’s Surprise, tasting the delicious fruits from her basket (the passion fruit wasn’t a hit, but the pineapple was a clear favourite!). The children did a fantastic job sequencing the story and recalling key events, sharing excellent facts along the way.

In maths, we explored 2D shape sorting and practised counting forwards and backwards from any given number. We also spent time talking about The Colour Monster, recognising different emotions and noticing how feelings can be experienced in different parts of our bodies.

We enjoyed baking Brazilian Milk Tarts, which smelt absolutely divine, and shared lots of lovely moments of turn-taking and kindness towards one another. We even embraced the weather, running around in the rain for a wonderful sensory experience!

We have been so busy, we forgot to take pictures!

What a busy and joyful couple of weeks! ✨
