Lois and I did a thing today....

This one loves to use her nose so I thought I'd see if she liked Barn Hunt 🐁

She was 15 weeks yesterday so still a young toot so wasn't expecting much from her.

Her first round she was very enthusiastic and focused, digging a little at the tube to indicate (something we've done a wee bit of with some food hidden under a couple of flowerpots). Was very happy that she enjoyed it and was able to focus on the task since she is only wee and easily distracted 😂

Her second round she was more distracted but did a bit of problem solving to get on the highest bales to find the tube (with some human help).

The third round was about building some confidence with going through the tunnel (a requirement in the competition) and she had a second wind in sniffing out the tube.

All in all she had a cracking start, I learned a lot about what Barn Hunt involves and it's something we are going to progress as she appears to be a natural at it 🙂

The highlight as a handler was definitely that she did not p*e in the trial area (IYKYK 🙈😂)

At just 15 weeks old, she took to it like a duck to water and absolutely smashed her intro session! 💜

While puppies are growing, it’s just as important to exercise those little brains as it is their bodies. Giving them opportunities to sniff, search, problem solve and explore is a fantastic way to build confidence while tiring out that busy puppy brain! 🧠✨

Lois certainly didn’t let her age hold her back she kept up with the adults and showed us exactly what that little nose can do! 🥹👏🏼

Well it's been a busy 7 days, so busy that I haven't had time to introduce the newest member of the pack.

After The O.G. left us in April I decided to take a bit of time of just me and the boys before looking for a pup.

I started looking around mid June and flitted around looking at a few breeds that I would possibly like to get - Black Lab, Cocker Spaniel, Sprocker - and of course Jack Russells.

I enquired after a few pups but they either had gone or the breeder just didn't feel quite right or wanted to charge the Earth!

A page came up on my timeline with this pup who had a Terrier mum and a Spaniel dad. Something about her caught my eye....I went to see her but wasn't 100% sure so needed some time to think. When I got home that evening, I started Googling names and came across the name of a Greek Goddess:

Achelois (pronounced “A-khe-LO-ees”) was a minor Greek goddess from ancient times. She was one of the deities, many of them female, identified with the moon and its monthly cycle. Achelois has been translated in English as “she who washes away pain”, and she was often looked to by the ancient Greeks as a source of comfort and healing.

Well, that just sealed it for me....I'm a big believer in Fate and know the O.G. had picked this one for me to help us move along. No other puppy had stuck in my head when I was looking and she was the only one I felt compelled to go and see. Sally has picked her so that's the one I was getting 😆.

So please meet Achelois (Lois for short). She is already showing Terrier spirit but will likely be Spaniel size judging by the size of the paws.

We're in for an interesting ride but we wouldn't have it any other way! 🐾

It's time to mention that buzzword that's been going about for the last few days - Heatwave!

I found this chart which is a good illustration about walking dogs safely in the heat.

Young puppies, Brachycepahlic breeds and Seniors are more susceptible in extremes of weather and so caution must be taken in even walking them in certain levels of temperature. Other factors to consider are weight, age, fitness level and fur type.

As per my policy, once the thermometer hits 20°C, walks are brought forward to avoid the building heat throughout the day and walks are shortened for everyone's safety & wellbeing (or changed to a home & garden visit for susceptible breeds/puppies/Seniors).

I always carry drinking water and wherever possible on hot days like those forecast, I especially like to take the dogs places where there is some running water to allow them to cool off if need be (sorry in advance to those who have absolute bog monsters who love muddy puddles as well as the clean, running water as there may be extra visits to these spots this week😂).

Hopefully we have some pleasant but cooler temps soon but summer is almost definitely here! 🐾☀️😎

On Tuesday 7th April we said goodbye to the O.G.

Sally definitely came to be a very important dog in my work life and a loving, crazy companion in my family life. She will be sorely missed by myself and my kids.

I'm very proud of the training journey we took together which resulted in her being one of my "stooge dogs" for client sessions, and she also would come out for Basic Obedience/group class from time to time. In the latter years she became so reliable, smart and competent - she was my rock and we had each other's backs.

R.I.P. Sally 🌈 🐾
