Icarus creatives is an art/performance platform that is about creating opportunities for our and creativity in Mitcham and the wider area of Merton. The main question of the company is 'you wouldn't expect education not to be provided for? And you wouldn't expect healthcare not to be provided for all? So why not Art?

Huge congratulations to Conrad Murray, founder of BAC Beatbox Academy and Artistic Director of Beats and Elements, for reimagining the rules of theatre in order to empower new and atypical generations of artists.
Conrad Murray founded the Battersea Arts Centre's Beatbox Academy in 2008. Since then, it has given opportunity, visibility and confidence through performance to hundreds of young people who might not normally have access to the arts. Originally from a council estate in Merton, Murray has used his award-winning skills to subvert elitism, reimagining Shakespeare and classic novels such as Frankenstein in his collaborative hip hop theatre work. He has written academically about this evolving genre, and recently shared a project with the prestigious ballet company, Rambert. What a journey! Displaying enormous generosity of spirit, Murray always has time to support those who need help and unfailingly shares the credit for successes. However, this one is for him alone.

Years ago at an open mic, Carl Chamberlain said what I think was a throw away comment after my set, that 'this guy is actually talented behind all the humous and gags..he's a serious artist' . Not that I don't take my craft seriously , but he was right to the effect that I often hid behind comedy, wit, and sarcasm. And acting silly tbh-

I'm still like that really, but it really resonated with me, and stayed with me for a long time- because I hadn't thought of myself like that. It inspired me to respect , my somewhat limited, talents (both natural and worked for) and enjoy and take ownership of them. I hadn't thought about my 'talent' in that way for a long time- if I ever had. It sparked a little fire in me.

Something just reminded me of that this morning.
