Someone makes a mistake.

Which question comes first?

❌ "Why did you do that?"
or
✅ "Talk me through what happened."

One can immediately feel like blame.

The other gives you a chance to understand how they got there.

Then ask:

"What would you do differently next time?"

Accountability still matters.

But if we want people to learn, our conversations need to create room for learning.

Save this for the next time something goes wrong.

Your teenager gets in the car after school and you immediately know something has happened.

It’s tempting to start asking questions especially when you’re worried and just want to help.

But they may still be processing what happened themselves.

Rather than interrogating them in the car, give them some space and come back to it later.

Try:

“I noticed you seemed upset earlier. I’m not going to push, but I’m here if you want to talk.”

That small shift changes the conversation from “Tell me what happened” to “I’m here when you’re ready.”

The debrief, not the lecture.

Better Understanding. Better Conversations. Stronger Relationships.

Share this with a parent who needs this reminder.

I feel like I am in my own version of Race Across the world:

One 7 hour flight ✅

One 5 hour flight ✅

One journey to the bus station to drop the bags ✅.

One journey to then go to catch the bus as we weren’t allowed to get on the bus where we dropped our bags? 🤦🏻✅.

12 hours into our 13/14 our bus journey ✅.

Then we have a 4 hour car journey.

It’s an adventure if a lifetime 😊.

Will keep you posted 😊.

Have you ever watched your teenager walk through the door and known immediately that something isn’t right?

The instinct can be to follow them and find out what’s happened.

But sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is give them a little space while quietly showing them:

I’m here. I’m not going anywhere. You can come to me when you’re ready.

Connection doesn’t always begin with a conversation.

Sometimes it begins with dinner on the table, sitting beside them on the sofa, or simply not pushing for an answer.

Better Understanding. Better Conversations. Stronger Relationships.

Save this for a hard day.

It’s not to late to sign up and join us:

There are some things about starting secondary school that nobody really warns parents about.

Your child might attach themselves to the first friend they make.

They might carry practically everything they own around in their school bag because they’re terrified of forgetting something.

And when you ask how things are going, you may get the standard answer:

“It’s fine.”

It can be easy to worry that something is wrong. But much of this is part of finding their feet.

Year 7 is a period of huge change, new friendships, new expectations, more independence and a completely different social environment. And those early friendships may change considerably as they move through secondary school.

Sometimes understanding what’s happening helps us stay calmer while they work it out.

💾 Save this post if you have a child starting or navigating secondary school.

I’ll be talking about this and much more in my FREE online workshop, on Tuesday 8th September at 7.30pm.

What if the problem isn’t your child?

What if they’re not being difficult, lazy or refusing to engage?

What if the environment they’re in simply isn’t working for them?

🎙️ This week I’m joined by the brilliant Sally Michaels from Blue Squid Learning for a conversation I think a lot of parents need to hear.

We talk about:

🧠 Neurodiversity
🏫 Struggling to attend school
🎭 Masking – and why they can seem “fine” at school and fall apart at home
❤️ Shame and its impact on young people
🔥 Fight or flight
🤝 Why understanding needs to come before control

And there was one moment I haven't stopped thinking about.

Sally asked the young people she works with why they were able to learn and engage with her when school had become so difficult.

Their answer?

“You’re nice to us."

Sometimes we need to stop asking, “How do I make them behave differently?”

And start asking, “What is happening for them?”

Has your child started secondary school and you’re wondering where the child who used to tell you everything has gone?

The transition to secondary school doesn’t end after the first few days of Year 7.

As they move through Years 7, 8 and 9, there can be changing friendships, new pressures, growing independence and changes in how they communicate with you.

My FREE online workshop, Starting Secondary School: What Your Child Needs From You, is about helping you understand what might be going on and giving you practical ways to keep the conversation open.
