It's your first week of college next week!
Practical animal sessions start Monday, are you prepared?
In order to keep yourselves and our animals safe during practical work, we have a strict Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) policy.
To prevent the spread of disease from our animals to yourself, yourself or your pets to our animals, to prevent injury to yourself and/or animals and to prevent loss or damage of personal clothing/belongings, you must adhere to the following PPE policy when working anywhere in the animal unit areas
🌿 Navy blue overalls - to protect personal clothing and to limit the spread of disease between yourself and animals
🌿 Steel toe-capped boots/wellies - to protect your feet and reduce contamination
🌿 Hair tied up - to avoid contact with animals and/or their waste and so as to not impair vision
🌿 Piercings out/covered up and all other jewellery removed - to prevent your jewellery from going missing or getting damaged and more importantly, to prevent accidental injury to yourself if an animal interacts with you, or injury to the animal if jewellery falls out in their enclosure
🌿 False nails/nail polish covered with disposable gloves - (this includes acrylics, biab and gel polish) the glamour meets the unglamorous - you will be touching A LOT of animal waste when working practically💩. Animal waste and other contaminants easily get trapped underneath long nails/nail extensions, which can then make you, others and animals sick. They are also an injury risk to yourself and our animals. Nails should be a suitable length, covered with disposable gloves and/or removed. Sharp stiletto or overly long nails are not acceptable as they can injure animals during handling.
Let's be prepared and professional!
