This week in nursery we have introduced our tappy sticks. We have practised tapping, scraping, drumming and rolling, as well as using different speeds and positions.
Using small wooden sticks in each hand and tapping them to music offers a wide range of developmental benefits for young children, including:
1. Fine Motor Development
Tapping sticks encourages children to strengthen the small muscles in their hands and fingers. Holding the sticks correctly also improves grip control and hand stability.
2. Bilateral Coordination
Using both hands at the same time helps children learn how to coordinate both sides of their body. This skill is essential for tasks like writing, cutting, catching a ball, and dressing themselves.
3. Rhythm and Auditory Skills
Following a beat or tapping along to music develops a child’s sense of rhythm, listening skills, and sound discrimination. This lays a foundation for early literacy, as rhythm is strongly linked to language development.
4. Concentration and Focus
Learning when to tap, stop, or change pace requires attention and self-control. Musical activities naturally support longer focus spans in young children.
5. Cognitive Development
Keeping a steady beat and following musical patterns help children understand sequencing, cause and effect, and early mathematical concepts such as patterns and counting.
6. Social and Emotional Growth
Group tapping activities help children work together, take turns, and feel connected. Music also provides an emotional outlet and boosts confidence when they successfully follow the rhythm.
7. Creativity and Expression
Children can explore different sounds, invent their own rhythms, and express themselves through movement and music. 🎶
Have you got anything at home you could use as tappy sticks? Wooden spoons are always good! There are lots of songs you can find to tap along with, we have loved it 🥰
