🐟 Cooke Factory Visit 🐟

Upper primary have rounded off their topic on food and farming with a brilliant visit to the Cooke processing plant right here in Mid Yell.

The class learned loads about the journey a salmon takes from the sea to plate and the different jobs involved at the factory.
They completed tasks such as weighing salmon and grading them before packing them for a customer and some sieving to identify various types of shells.

A big thank you to Cooke, especially Michelle, Christine and Emma, not only for the fantastic visit but also the gift bags and the salmon! It was a brilliant, local experience for the class! 🍣 🐟

🐟🕶️ S1 Overnight Trip 🕶️🐟

Our S1 class have just returned for a great over night trip. The pupils were involved in deciding what they wanted to do and organising the trip, giving them the opportunity to work together, make decisions and take responsibility.

The trip was packed with activities and plenty of team work! At the climbing wall in Aith pupils worked together to support each other using ropes. We then headed to Clickimin where they had great fun on the flumes. 🏊🏼‍♂️

Afterwards we had dinner at Magnos, followed by an overnight start in Bridge End. Then some shopping and fishing today with Robert and Billy both managing to catch a fish! 🐟👏🏼

It was great to see the pupils spending time together, supporting one another, trying new things and building stronger friendships as a class. ⭐️

🚢🚨 S1 & S2 Coastguard & Northlink Trip 🚨🚢

S1 and S2 had a great day exploring some of the career opportunities available in the maritime and emergency services sectors.

The pupils visited the Coastguard in Lerwick where they had the opportunity to work with climbing and rescue equipment.

They then headed over to NorthLink, where they enjoyed a tour of the vessel and spoke with members of staff about the wide range of jobs and career pathways available on board.

It was a valuable experience, giving pupils the opportunity to find out more about the different roles within these sectors, ask questions and see what working in these industries could look like in the future. Thank you to Developing the Young Workforce - Shetland for organising the trip!

🐑 Marts Trip 🐑

Upper primary have had a fantastic day in Lerwick today with so much to see and learn.

They’ve seen the sheep sales where we had great fun predicting the prices and spotting some of the types of sheep we’ve been learning about, visited the marts cafe for a delicious bun and then the wool brokers and shop where we bought a souvenir for the classroom.

Thank you to Cullivoe Primary for letting us join you on your top day out, to James Nicholson for his valuable insight into the sheep sales, Derek at Jamieson & Smiths for taking the time to explain the different wool grades and let us look around and to Lee Jamieson for putting up with the bus singing. 🎶

🛠️ Engineering Event 🛠️

Yesterday our S2 class took part in an Engineering event organised by DYW. There were 11 local Shetland companies and organisations who provided activities for them to take part in, where they learned about different types of engineering.

While the focus was on taking part in the different activities and challenges, learning about different types of Engineering, it was also a great opportunity for them to ask questions build their knowledge of local companies and the careers that might be available to them.

It was a great event and everyone participated very positively.

💚 MacMillan Coffee Afternoon 💚

P4-7 worked hard last week getting ready for our MacMillan fundraiser. This involved advertising, writing a letter to ask for donations of homebakes and raffle prizes, going to the shop to get everything we needed, making sandwiches and then setting up and running the event.

A big thanks to everyone who came and supported this event. It was lovely to see you all and we are delighted to have been able to raise a fantastic £500.24 for MacMillan!!

A huge thank you to James and Johnina for welcoming Upper Primary to Breckon Farm! 🐑🐄

It was brilliant to see our classroom learning brought to life as we learned about different breeds, sustainable farming practices and even saw the sheepdogs in action. A fantastic visit, and thank you both for sharing your knowledge and answering our many, many questions! 😊
