Saturday Species Spotlight: Grass-of-Parnassus 🌿

As I’m in Fife, I thought I’d share a species I came across this week. I thought it was time for a spotlight that wasn’t a bird! 🐦

Grass-of-Parnassus isn’t actually a grass. Instead, it gets its common name from the translucent green stripes that adorn the white petals of its beautiful, cup-shaped flowers.

Once more widely distributed, it is now mainly found in damp pastures, moors and marshes, particularly in the north of the UK. However, it can still be found in places such as the Norfolk Broads and fens, as well as in localised patches further south. It flowers between June and September.

I’ve seen Grass-of-Parnassus in the uplands before, but this one was a little different — growing in a salt marsh on the edge of sand dunes!

Also known as ‘Bog-star’, Grass-of-Parnassus is the county flower of both historic Cumberland in England and Sutherland in Scotland.

A lovely reminder that you never quite know where you’ll find a wildflower! 🌿

Isle of Skye Tour?

Following on from last night’s Fife question…
The last few years in May we’ve been to Skye watching otters, eagles and migrants. Daz (Boot Routes) and I are keen to turn this knowledge into an Isle of Skye Tour?

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Fife!

Many of our walks are in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Lincolnshire (obviously) and North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 as it’s an area we know well. Each year I spent a week in Fife, and am keen to add this to our calendar in future! The Fife Coastal Path is full of great beaches, nature reserves, dramatic coastline, quaint villages and harbours!

Who’d be up for a Fife bird tour, or an organised Fife walking holiday?

𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬?

This week a Kestrel made it to my garden list!

Do you keep a bird list? A butterfly list?
For U.K. birds I try and keep a life list, a year list, a farm list and a garden list. As per RSPB garden bird watch it only counts for me as a garden visitor if it lands on a hedge, lawn, feeder inside your garden and a female Kestrel landed on our shed!

Recently I added Yellow Wagtail to the Farm list which was pretty cool too!

I try not to twitch too much or chase rarities but a life list does encourage you to new places?

WhatsApp Community Chat

We’ve had lots of queries about things like lift sharing. Not only is it cheaper and helpful for people who can’t easily get to events, but it’s also much more environmentally friendly. 🌱

We’re also sure there are plenty of simple little questions you might have but feel a bit awkward asking!

I’ve been wondering for a while about the best way to coordinate all of this, so I’ve decided to create a WhatsApp group where you can chat with me and other trip participants.

For example:

“I fancy doing the welsh birding tour, but I don’t want to drive. I’m happy to contribute towards fuel — is anyone going from Lincoln?”

You get the idea!

It’ll also be an easier way for me to share things like discounts, PDFs and other useful bits of information, rather than emailing everyone separately.

Great volunteering opportunity for DofE students!!

After a hugely successful first year, seeing 11 young people complete their Duke of Edinburgh's Awards, our DofE Volunteer Work Party is back! Starting September, young people can once again join our team to undertake habitat management, practical conservation and public engagement tasks to work towards either their Volunteering or Skills sections for their DofE. Here are the details;
