✨ Start of year reflections with time capsules ✨

We kicked off the new year with a session making time capsules, a gentle space to think about who we are right now and who we might be becoming.

We talked about things we enjoy, what we’re good at, what feels important to us at this moment and what we’d like to get better at as the year goes on. We added drawings, pictures and little models of things we love, alongside messages to our future selves to open later on 💌

This session was carefully differentiated so children could take part in a way that felt right for them, whether that be working more independently, with a little spelling support where needed, or having more help with sentence building and me scribing for them when writing started to feel like too much.

As always, what mattered most wasn’t perfect writing. It was voice, self-belief and feeling heard. A lovely reminder that reflection, growth and aspiration look different for every child 🌱

MINDFULNESS THROUGH ART (Without the Pressure!)

This week I tried something new in a 1:1 session. A mindful, creative activity that invited calm, self-expression, and connection in a really gentle way.

We used a mix of mediums-washi tape, silhouettes, dark paint and watercolours to create self-portraits that reflected not just how we look, but who we are. While relaxing piano music played in the background, we traced the outline of our heads using shadows, painted around the outside in darkness, and then filled the space inside with drawings of things we love, what matters to us, and what makes us, us!

The session was quiet, focused, and calm, and a little different to our usual energy. It wasn’t ‘art therapy’ (I’m not a trained art therapist), but it was a low-pressure, therapeutic space to begin exploring big ideas like the brain, identity, emotions, and self-awareness.

I’ve found that even very creative children can sometimes struggle with art and craft activities, especially if perfectionism or anxiety gets in the way. That’s why abstract, sensory, and process-based art can be so powerful. There’s no “wrong” way to do it, and that freedom can help children reconnect with their creativity in a way that feels safe again.

As someone with a background in psychology and years of experience supporting emotional regulation and SEN, I’m always looking for creative ways to help children tune into their thoughts and feelings, especially when talking can feel too much.

I'm definitely going to build more of these types of sessions into my work. Using art, mindfulness and curiosity about how our brains and feelings work.

Have you ever tried using art to open up conversations with your children or the children you work with? I'd love to hear about it.

If you are interested in keeping up to date with sessions like these, drop me an email at [email protected] and I can add you to my mailing list.

TEACHING BASED AROUND INTERESTS

Subordinating conjunctions are a bit easier to learn…... when you're an animal lover and you are set the challenge of writing vet reports.

Because the cat refused to take her medicine, she is now sulking under a towel.
Although the dog only has a sore paw, he insists on being carried everywhere.
If he is not hungry, the tortoise will not come out of his shell.

Grammar gets a bit more fun when cats, dogs, and rabbits are your patients

EVERY CHILD IS UNIQUE

We can’t expect one method of teaching to work for all minds. Instead, we adapt, explore, and connect in the ways that every individual understands best.

Because the best teaching starts with real understanding.

READING TO CHILDREN

Did you know that reading aloud is such a powerful way to build a child’s confidence, even long after they can read for themselves?

WHY?

It builds empathy. When we read stories together, children step into other people's shoes. They can think about how character's feel and how they might feel in the same situation.

It strengthens language development, vocabulary and listening skills. Listening to stories introduces new words and new ideas.

It creates safe spaces. Reading aloud often opens doors to important (and sometimes tricky) conversations about bravery, fairness, kindness and feelings.

It encourages creativity. It fires up a child's imagination and helps them see endless possibilities.

And maybe most importantly....... it’s just fun.

Sitting side-by-side, laughing together at a silly story, you’re not just teaching reading skills. You’re building a connection. A shared experience that encourages trust in you and in themselves.

Keep reading with them. For as long as they will let you.

WRITING TOOLS AND WHY THEY MATTER

When young children are learning to write, having the right tools can make all the difference. Word mats, tricky word cards, and self-marking resources might seem simple, but they’re incredibly powerful in building confidence.

These tools give children the freedom to have a go independently. Rather than getting stuck on spellings or worrying about getting it 'wrong', they can focus on what really matters, expressing their ideas and telling their stories. They’re not constantly reliant on an adult, and they build an 'I can do this' attitude.

I’ve seen first-hand how painful it is when a child fears writing. Not because they lack imagination, but because they’re scared of making mistakes. That anxiety can make even starting on something feel impossible. It’s heartbreaking to watch a child full of ideas and creativity keep them locked inside out of fear.

Sometimes, the journey back to confidence means going right back to basics. I’ll scribe for a child if needed, doing the physical writing for them. Because with the right support, that spark can come back and when it does, and they take the pen back, it's magical.

Children who feel supported and not just spoon-fed, begin to take ownership of their writing. They feel proud. They take risks. And that’s how we grow resilient, independent writers.

Navigating the Special Educational Needs (SEN) system can feel overwhelming and exhausting at times, but you
don’t have to do it alone.

Do you have weeks where you have all the fight in the world for your child, making calls, sending emails, chasing up professionals? Followed by blank periods where you feel like giving up and the guilt of not 'chasing things up' eats away at you? I've been there.

I’m here to guide and support you every step of the way. Helping to keep YOUR needs met, so you can focus on your child's.

I can offer not only practical advice but also emotional reassurance. My approach is
rooted in the belief that parents already have the strength and ability to advocate for
their children, sometimes they just need someone by their side to coach, guide, and
empower them.

Whether you’re applying for an EHCP, reviewing documents or reports, looking for advice about parenting a child with complex needs, or working through the next steps, I’ll help you feel confident and equipped to move forward. With a relaxed and friendly style, my aim is to make the process clearer and less stressful while
helping you tap into your own resilience and skills.

Even if it is just providing a friendly chat and a coffee to help you gather your thoughts and put an action plan in to place, I know how valuable it can be to just have someone in the side lines, cheering you on.

I have flexible support packages available so there are no expensive monthly commitments. From help wording emails and letters, helping you review your EHCP and provision, or supporting you to build and budget for bespoke education packages, I can help.

I am passionate about what I do because I have been there. I get it. I won't always have all of the answers, but have no doubt I can support you to find them.

LEARNING THAT MAKES SENSE

This week’s maths session was all about fractions, but there wasn’t a textbook in sight. Instead, we used chocolate and toy horses to bring the concept to life. Sharing out treats made fractions feel real and fun, and it was incredible to see that lightbulb moment when it all clicked.

Understanding the ‘why’ behind learning is so important. How many of us were taught algebra without ever knowing its purpose? How often do older students lose interest because they don’t see the point? As a parent of two teenagers, I hear this all the time and I remember feeling the same way myself.

Research shows that when learning connects to a child’s interests, engagement and well-being soar. That’s why I shape each session around what matters to them. Whether it’s maths through horses, writing with real purpose, or problem-solving through hands-on activities, learning should always feel meaningful and enjoyable, at any age!

For children with SEN, a flexible, creative approach isn’t just helpful, it’s essential. But in truth, I’ve yet to meet a student who doesn’t benefit from it.

After 8 years of setting up and managing Daffodils Outdoor Nursery, I'm back to doing what I love best, teaching! Where everything began.

A bespoke session today based around individual interests. Made up of a little science, some English, and a Piano lesson. Next week will be all about horse care and Story Writing.

And the second thing I love doing, learning!
It's a good job really as I've signed myself up for a SEND Law course.

Think I will need a coffee before I get started on this long list of legislation😬

The latest figures from the SEND Tribunal show no improvement in lawful decision-making by local authorities: the number of appeals is at an all-time high, with 95% going in favour of families.

Getting decision-making right for children and young people with SEND must become a priority – they only have one childhood.
