THE SENSORY CRASH: WHAT IT FEELS LIKE INSIDE THE BODY
It is not bad behaviour. It is not a choice. It is the nervous system reaching its limit. π
James' brain receives so much at once, sound, sirens, voices, hand dryers, chatter, alarms, light, fluorescent lights, bright sun, flashing screens, movement, crowds, buses, doors, vibrations, touch, clothing tags, tight spaces, unexpected contact, smell, strong smells, cleaning products, perfume, speech, conversations, multiple voices, fast speech, and expectations, demands, changes, time limits, next steps. His body turns on protection mode because too much comes in at once and not enough gets filtered.
Inside, multiple brain areas fire together, the thalamus filtering and sending signals, the insula processing body feelings and sensory signals, the amygdala detecting threat and triggering the stress response, and the sensory cortex receiving input from the body. Too many signals. Not enough space. A body that needs to escape. For James, this can look like a racing heart, a tense body, speeding thoughts, and a real need for support, not judgement.
Even things meant to keep him safe, like a seatbelt, can feel unbearable, too tight, pressing on his chest, hard to breathe, trapping him in place. This isn't stubbornness. It's his body's way of saying, "I'm in danger."
Transitions are a huge trigger, leaving home, arriving somewhere new, changing activities, waiting unexpectedly, ending something fun, or being asked to do something. Transitions don't just change what's happening. They change how safe his brain feels.
Outwardly, this can look like being overwhelmed, withdrawn, self-injury, fight response, flight response, or shutdown. He is not giving you a hard time. He is having a hard time.

THE SENSORY STRUGGLE: WEARING A SEAT BELT
βFor many autistic people, a seat belt does not feel like "just pressure." It can feel intense, invasive, and even painful. The constant pressure across the chest or neck can feel tight, restrictive, and hard to escape, triggering a fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown response. It may feel like:
β’ A band squeezing the chest that makes it hard to breathe deeply.
β’ Straps digging into the neck, collarbone, or stomach.
β’ Clothing trapped under the belt, causing itching, rubbing, or sharp discomfort.
β’ Pressure that never stops, making the body feel trapped and unable to move freely.
β’ Overwhelming closeness that feels claustrophobic and unsafe.
When the seat belt is added to car noises, bumps, bright lights, smells, and the stress of transitions, the nervous system can quickly reach overload. This is why removing the belt, trying to escape, crying, or shutting down are not defianceβthey are survival responses.
Safety is always essential, but understanding how the seat belt feels to them allows us to find supportive solutions instead of judging their distress. π
