Hell of a seminar today from Charles do Bronxs. Big thanks to JOYAGEAR / JOYAGEAR UK for their hospitality & facilitation at a well organized event, allowing normal people to meet & train with greats of the UFC. VIP is definitely the way forward for me, loved it.

Vintage inspired custom “O Jiu-Jitsu não é só isso, não!” tech tee fulfilled by ARTMARTIAL PRINT. It translates as “Jiu-Jitsu Is Much More Than You Think” — the 1950’s Gracie Academy advert inspiration behind the name of my platform.

Before modern MMA, there was another way of testing martial arts: the challenge match.

In Brazil, the Gracie family became closely associated with this culture through what became known as the Gracie Challenge. Practitioners from different disciplines could test their skills against one another, often without the restrictions and standardisation we now associate with modern competition.

Boxing, wrestling, Judo, Luta Livre and other systems could be brought together with one fundamental question: Does it actually work when the other person is resisting?

Pressure testing the principles being taught against an opponent who didn’t cooperate, didn’t follow your rules and was actively trying to defeat you.

Footage of fighters such as 9th degree red belt Grand Master gives us a glimpse into that period of martial arts history, when these encounters helped shape the evolution of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and, ultimately, the wider concept of mixed martial arts.

There seems to be an increasing comfort with being abusive, insulting and threatening towards other people, particularly when there’s a screen, a keyboard or some form of physical barrier between us.

Online, people can say things they would probably never have the courage to say face to face. Road rage is another example, where frustration can quickly turn into aggression because people feel protected by the perceived safety of their vehicle. In a world of influencers, streamers, auditors & agitators there is also a perceived safety of being filmed. As if the screens are another barrier from reality.

You never know what sort of day someone else is having. You don’t know what they’re dealing with, what boundaries they’ve already reached, or how they’re going to respond when those boundaries are crossed.

We should never become so comfortable with disrespect that we forget there is another person being on the other side of it. Especially when we cross the boundaries between what we say and what we are prepared to do in the real world.
