How Does Nursing Burnout Happen? My Bedside Reflection

The video below reminds me my time Greenock.

Yes, a sick nurse, in a sick system, attending to sick patients.

This video reminds us that nursing is systematic pandemic.
Nurse burnout aetiology can be traced to:
1. Ill academic system that focuses on churning nurses out-workload issues
2. The NMC system that least prioritise nurses
3. Lack of job progression, I stayed in band 5 for eternity despite constant interviews
4. Financial strains-loans, bills and slow growth
5. Lack nurse support, no trainings- just seem to understand what nurses need.

What Happens Next

→ Your workload increases, but your support does not.

→ You start making small mistakes, not because you do not care, but because you are carrying too much.

→ You go home and replay your shift in your head, wondering what you missed.

→ You start having signs of being a bad nurse.

→ You begin doubt your career as a nurse.

Then the thought of quitting start lingering, you feel you are no longer valuable and in a wrong profession, you want to let go, but to what?

How to conduct thematic analysis with AI?

Our Answer: Not Yet

AI-driven thematic analysis comes with several risks:
-Risk of oversimplifying complex qualitative data
-Risk of omitting important data
-Risk of having non-existing data-especially in qualitative studies

In all thematic analysis, the human insight remains irreplaceable.

How to Respond to Acute Asthma Exacerbation

Consider the clinical situation and apply the Levett
Jones Clinical Reasoning Cycle (CRC) to demonstrate clinical decision-making and person
centred care.

Acute Asthma Exacerbation in a Young Adult
Steps 1 & 2: Consider the patient situation and collect cues/information
You are the nurse taking over the ongoing care of P., a 21-year-old university student who identifies as non-binary (they/them). P has been brought into the Emergency Department (Majors) after collapsing outside their university campus.

Background Information
P is in their second year of a nursing degree and holds two part-time jobs to support themselves and contribute to their younger siblings' living costs. They became estranged from their parents after starting gender-affirming hormone therapy six months ago and currently live alone in shared student accommodation. P reports feeling constantly stressed and fatigued about the upcoming end-of-year exams.

He has known history of moderate persistent asthma, diagnosed at age 8, and eczema. P uses a salbutamol inhaler (100 micrograms/dose) PRN and a budesonide/formoterol (Symbicort 200/6) inhaler twice daily, although they admit to missing doses in the past week due to exhaustion and cost. There is no known drug allergy. Henon-smoker and consume minimal alcohol. No history of illicit drug use. GP review one month ago noted increasing night-time wheeze and recommended a step-up in preventer inhaler therapy, which had not yet been actioned.\

How Much Can You Make as an RN? 💰

Exchange value for more effectively

💡 The Million-Dollar Myth:
Take a million, divide it by 12 months, then by 20 workdays—reality check: hitting a million by exchanging time for money in nursing can be tough. But there's good news! The key is to focus on exchanging value for money. 💡

As a nurse in my 30s, I can confidently say I’d choose nursing again, regardless of age. It’s a career driven by passion, and for those entering the profession, it’s deeper than the paycheck. You have to be genuinely selfless and driven by a deep desire to help others. For me, it was inspired by caring for my ailing grandparents—nursing is truly a calling.

What if it’s your time to leave bedside

Burnout, anxiety, and the pressure of tight regulations can make it hard to stay passionate in nursing. The advantage is that nursing skills are highly transferable and can unlock doors to financial freedom, both within and outside of traditional nursing roles.

💡 Six-Figure Earnings as an RN
With an RN title, hitting six-figure earnings is achievable. But, the real “millionaire stories” often lie in corporate nursing or a hybrid career that blends your nursing expertise with other ventures. True financial freedom comes from leveraging your skills and aligning your strategy—not just relying on your RN title.

What if you’re in your 40s and considering leaving bedside nursing?
Many have made successful career overhauls! If you’re passionate about healthcare, you don’t have to leave the industry entirely.

Transitioning within healthcare can offer strategic opportunities without the burnout. It’s about finding the right path and acquiring additional skills, not starting over.

For example, my cousin made a career change from ICU to home nursing in her 30s. At 45, she’s pursuing a degree while working—proving that a smart transition can pay off.

Beyond Bedside Opportunities:
If you’re tired of trading your time for money, use your nursing expertise to create a 6-figure income in the following areas:
• Telehealth
• Medical technology sales
• Wellness programs
• Disability support services
• Nurse consultancy (independent or collaboration)
• Nursing agency and international recruitment
• Concierge nursing services
• Home health agency
• Nursing training centres
• Medical equipment rentals
• Continence care products

Focus on using your nursing skills to add value, and you can craft a career that brings both financial freedom and personal fulfilment.

How to Write a Nursing Research Question?

When guiding research mentees, I always ask them to rewrite their research question three times:
1. For Clarity
2. For Curiosity
3. For Study

Can you give this a try? ✍️

Steps to Writing Your Nursing Research Question:
1. Identify & Define Your Research Topic:
This is your broad topic area. (Example: Obesity Management)

2. Describe the Research Problem:
What issue are you addressing? For example, "Childhood obesity continues to rise among [XX population]."

3. Identify the Research Gap & Justify the Investigation:
-What is unresolved?
-What information is missing?
-Why is this research important?

4. Develop Your Research Question:
-Brainstorm: Use what, why, when, where, who, and how to generate questions.
-Draft a Primary Question: Find the main question that directly addresses the research problem.
-Develop Secondary Questions: Focus on themes or hypotheses. Look for emerging patterns in your brainstorming.

Remember, your research question is the foundation of your entire study! 💡

How to Transition from Bedside Nursing

Bedside nursing brings out the best in you.

The moments of joy, satisfaction, and sometimes tears, are what make this profession unique. However, it is not uncommon for nurses to face burnout. At times, nurses decide to leave the bedside and transition to a different path.
For me, leaving bedside nursing was the best decision I made for my personal growth and self-awareness. I transitioned into becoming a research nurse, and I truly believe this is where I’m meant to be.

If you are feeling that your shift work is draining you, burnout is becoming more frequent, your grades are dropping, or insomnia is taking a toll, it’s time to talk to someone — whether it’s your team, a career coach, or your ward leader. Bedside nursing can significantly impact your mental health, physical health, and emotional wellbeing.

Sometimes, it may be time to consider a career transition. There are so many possibilities within the nursing field and beyond. Nurses can explore exciting careers in areas like:
• Medical sales
• Pharmaceuticals
• Therapist
• Occupational health and safety
• Health education within colleges and universities
• Public sector roles in the schooling system
• Quality assurance
• Information technology and informatics
• Research nursing, like I did!

At uknurses.net, we connect UK nurses, Australian nurses, New Zealand nurses, and international nurses with both active practitioners and those who have successfully transitioned into new career paths. Whether you're considering transitioning within nursing or exploring other industries, we’re here to help you take the next step in your nursing career and professional development.
