🫁 Why does asthma cause a wheeze?

You know wheezing is associated with asthma… but do you actually know why it happens? 👀

During an asthma flare-up, the airways can become inflamed and narrowed, the smooth muscle around them can tighten (bronchoconstriction), and increased mucus can make the airway even smaller.

💨 As air is forced through these narrowed airways, it creates the characteristic high-pitched wheezing sound, often more noticeable on expiration.

But remember: not hearing a wheeze doesn’t automatically mean the asthma isn’t severe. In a life-threatening attack, very little air movement can result in a silent chest, which is a red flag requiring urgent escalation. 🚨

🚨 Student nurses: a high potassium result doesn’t always mean what you think…

Seeing a raised potassium can immediately make you think hyperkalaemia but could the blood sample be haemolysed? 🩸

Understanding why blood results are abnormal is just as important as remembering the normal ranges. Always consider the patient’s clinical picture, ECG findings and whether an unexpected result needs repeating/escalating according to local policy.

August is Appendix Cancer Awareness Month 🎗️

Appendix cancer is rare, and the symptoms can be vague — which means they may be mistaken for more common gastrointestinal problems.

Some possible signs and symptoms can include:

🔸 Persistent or worsening abdominal pain
🔸 Bloating or an increase in abdominal size
🔸 Changes in bowel habits
🔸 Nausea or vomiting
🔸 Feeling full quickly or loss of appetite
🔸 Unexplained weight loss
🔸 A lump or swelling in the abdomen
🔸 Symptoms that can initially resemble appendicitis

Some people may have very few symptoms, and appendix cancer can sometimes be discovered unexpectedly during surgery or investigations for another problem.

💡 Important: Having these symptoms does not mean you have appendix cancer. Many are caused by much more common conditions. But persistent, unexplained or worsening symptoms should always be discussed with a healthcare professional.

🎗️ Awareness matters — especially when it comes to rare cancers.
