The Manchester Universities String Society (MUSS) was formed by Toby Holden and Duncan Gallagher in Autumn 2014. An intercollegiate orchestra featuring students from the University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music, MUSS showcases aspiring-professional student string players through concerts accessible to the public.

Thank you to everyone who came to our concert this afternoon at the Whitworth Gallery, we really enjoyed ourselves! That was our last concert of this academic year but we are cooking up some exciting ideas for next year so stay tuned...

Meet the soloist for our concert this Friday!
Alex Mitchell is currently in the second year of his masters degree at the RNCM, studying with Petr Prause. His previous teachers include Nobuko Imai, Asdis Valdimarsdottir, Gina McCormack and Wen Zhou Li. During his college years he has won the Helen Porthouse Paganini prize, the Viola prize and Hirsch prize for chamber music. External awards include 5th prize at the Tokyo International Viola competition, 3rd prize at the Beethoven International Viola competition in Hradek and the Martin Musical Fund Meyer award. Chamber music forms a large part of Alex’s life and he is a member of the Zelkova string quartet. He is also joint assistant principal viola in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Alex’s hobbies include walking, cooking, and wearing odd socks.
