Irlen Manchester Irlen Syndrome ®

Irlen syndrome; also called Meares-Irlen Syndrome, Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome or Visual Stress is a perceptual processing disorder.

Irlen Syndrome ®

I am a Senior Irlen Screener with eight years’ experience screening both children and adults for visual distortions, supported by over 20 years of experience working in primary education, including 10 years as a classroom teacher and 2 years as a SENCO. My practice is firmly rooted in inclusive education and SEN support. I have a strong understanding of how visual processing difficulties can impact learning, literacy development, attention, behaviour, and access to the curriculum. This enables me to identify needs early and contribute meaningfully to targeted interventions and reasonable adjustments within educational settings. I work collaboratively with schools, SEN teams, parents, and other professionals to ensure screening outcomes are clearly understood and effectively used to support individual learners. I am committed to early identification, inclusive practice, and improving educational outcomes by removing barriers to learning and promoting equitable access for all pupils.

Yes, Irlen Syndrome is hereditary!

Meet 12 family members from Western Australia, all wearing Irlen Spectral Filters! Here’s what they had to say, “I wanted to share my family photo wearing our Irlen lenses. It’s been 13 months since we started on the Irlen journey and look at us now!!! So in this photo are my parents, brothers, sister, my husband, 3 kids and niece and nephew. Our Irlen lenses have helped us all in our own individual ways and for that we are all grateful.”

🌈Discover the potential connection between ADHD and Irlen Syndrome. Recent research indicates that many children who receive an ADHD diagnosis might actually have Irlen Syndrome influencing their symptoms🙁. A 2023 study found that adults diagnosed with both conditions reported significant improvement after using Irlen Spectral Filters, with many no longer fitting the criteria for ADHD after six months👓. This could mean that children on medication may benefit positively by being assessed for Irlen Syndrome🎓. You can investigate this by booking a Screening Appointment online from our website.

TINTED LENSES: Optometrist tinting versus Irlen tinting. Many optometrists are now providing tinted lenses to people and claiming that they are the same as Irlen lenses, but they are really only relieving glare sensitivity without investigating other Irlen related issues like;
* poor comprehension
* reading rate
* reading accuracy
* fading of text
* movement of words
* concentration on academic tasks
* mixing up mathematic symbols
* rereading for understanding
* inability to focus
All of the above are investigated during an Irlen appointment. That is why it takes a lot longer to select the specific tint at an Irlen Clinic than it does to select tinted lenses from an optometrist who is not trained in the Irlen method. Sometimes a number of different tints are required to remove all of the symptoms experienced. The lenses in the image look very similar and would both reduce glare for an individual, but an Irlen Diagnostician assesses all of the above symptoms before determining what is needed to remove them. THE CORRELATION BETWEEN VISUAL PERCEPTION AND READING DIFFICULTIES OR DYSLEXIA.
For years there has been an argument put forth that reading difficulties or dyslexia have no direct link to vision or visual perception.
However there has been research done back in 2017 in Turkey which shows a direct connection between difficulties in visual perception and difficulties in reading.https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1147376.pdf
The International Dyslexia Association itself has also been looking into these same connections as far back as 2016, and again found a link between children adults with poor visuospatial awareness and dyslexia.
https://dyslexiaida.org/what-is-the-role-of-the-visual-system-in-reading-and-dyslexia/
As they agree and believe more work needs to be done to determine how to treat these deficits to improve visuospatial awareness and therefore improve reading, there is a treatment already available.
Irlen Spectral Filters worn as glasses calm the visual cortex, improve visual perception and therefore improve reading in those with reading difficulties and some diagnosed as being dyslexic.
